Lanarkshire / Valuation Rolls
« on: Wednesday 06 August 14 09:04 BST (UK)  »
Is it possible to tell from the order of people appearing on a valuation roll for a tenement building, which floor they lived on?  Did the list start from the bottom floor and go upwards, or the other way around, or is the no particular order?

My great-grandfather is on an 1895 roll in Glasgow, listed as the seventh of eight people living at 18 Bolton Drive, Parish of Cathcart.

Many thanks for any help.

England / Three great-great-grandparents 'missing' from FreeBMD (births 1838-1845)
« on: Wednesday 23 January 13 14:36 GMT (UK)  »
I can't find three of my great-great-grandparents on FreeBMD.  I'm aware that they were born soon after civil registration began.  I hav tried (I think) all the usual misspellings etc. but to no avail.  I transcribe for FreeBMD so feel I understand the site quite well, but maybe I'm missing a trick (or two)?

1.  David Godden, baptised 16 Aug 1840 in Ruckinge, Kent.  On all censuses from 1841 to 1911 inclusive (ages 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 61 and 70).  1861 census states 'born Bilsington', all others (except 1841 of course) state 'born Ruckinge'.  He died 23 jul 1916, aged 76.  His older brother, Orland(o) was registered in 1838.  Ruckinge is in East Ashford RD.

2.   Mary Shepherd, baptised 27 Jan 1846, Temple Guiting, Gloucestershire.  On census 1851 to 1891 inclusive (ages 5, 15, 26, 37, 44).   All census records state 'born Pinnock, Gloucestershire'.  She died 6 Aug 1896, age 53.  Pinnock is in Winchcomb RD.

3.  David Rogers, baptised 27 Sep 1838, Builth, Breconshire.  On 1841, 1851, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses (ages 2, 12, 31, 42, 52, 60).  1881 census states 'born Blaenavon', all others (except 1841) state 'born Builth'.  He died 3 May 1910, age 70.  Builth is in Builth RD.

Any ideas?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm hoping that someone who is planning a trip to the Kent History and Library Centre might find a few minutes to check the records for the Kent County Lunatic Asylum.

My gg-grandmother, Elizabeth CRUST (nee LUCKHURST, born c1835 in Aldington) died there on 11 Dec 1912.  She was probably there at the time of the census in 1911, but only the initials of inmates are given on the census return.  ???   She was certainly not there at the time of the census in 1901, as she was in Kingsnorth with her husband Robert.  So she was (probably) admitted between 1901 and 1911.

Elizabeth's death certificate states that she was a widow, but in fact her husband is alive and well and living with their son in South Willesborough.  So I'm keen to find out the circumstances of Elizabeth's admission to Chartham, and whether her family ever visited her.

I'm currently unable to get to Maidstone and would be so grateful to anyone who can help.  Hopefully the unusual surname, CRUST, might make it easy to find her.

Australia / Albert Lewis GODDEN and family, Sydney, NSW
« on: Tuesday 08 January 13 07:03 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping to find more details about Albert Lewis GODDEN (born 1886, Ulcombe, Kent, England, died 3 Dec 1947, Sydney, NSW, Australia)'s family.  He had (at least) two sons:

Albert Louis GODDEN (born 1910, Windsor, Bershire, England) who served in the RAAF from 03 Sep 1935 to 23 Jan 1965.
Norman Alexander GODDEN (born 1913, Kent, England,  married Duloie Edna DEACON in 1953)

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Unsure of date of death
« on: Friday 21 December 12 06:15 GMT (UK)  »
I'm hoping someone can help with the date of death of my gg-grandmother.  The death was registered on 31 Dec 1912, so I'm guessing that she may have died the previous day, but I just can't get my eyes to read it that way!

Many thanks for any help.
