Somerset Lookup Requests / Bridge Street, Frome, Somerset
« on: Tuesday 09 April 24 16:59 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to electoral rolls for Bridge Street in Frome around 1957 or 1958? I am trying to find out where our family were living then and believe it was in Bridge Street in a flat. Many thanks if anyone can help.

Canada / Can I find out if my grandfather became a Citizen of Canada?
« on: Saturday 09 July 22 23:21 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather moved to Canada in approx 1906. He joined the North West Mounted Police and he also became a gold prospector and a homesteader in British Columbia in 1913 and worked on the railway to supplement his income. In 1916 he joined the Canadian Forestry Battalion and was posted back to England, the country of his birth. Recently, I read a letter from my aunt to my mother where she mentioned that she wondered if he had confused naturalisation papers with changing his name by deed poll. He did indeed go by another name, but it wasn't on his death certificate. I am wondering if he did take Canadian citizenship? Does anyone know how I might find out? Would he have been allowed to join the Canadian Forces if he was still British?

South Africa / Mining in South Africa circa 1904
« on: Tuesday 14 June 22 21:00 BST (UK)  »
I think this is a photo of my great uncle Syd. I know he came to Africa in 1904 as he is on a passenger list and when he appears to travel again to South Africa in 1908 it says his occupation is a miner. I always thought he worked on a farm but now I am wondering if the machinery he is sitting on is actually used for sifting soil at a mine? Can anyone identify the machinery - farm or mine?

Armed Forces / 2nd Boer War, British South African Police and West Kent Yeomanry
« on: Thursday 26 May 22 16:10 BST (UK)  »
Anyone know how I can find details from the 2nd Boer War, British South African Police (Rhodesia) and the West Kent Yeomanry? I think I may have posted in the wrong section and my enquiry has been deleted? oops. My grandad was in the 2nd Boer War, in the BSA police before further emigrating to Canada to the Mounted Police. I would like to find out when he went to Africa and when he left, how he might have travelled, (presumably by boat but cant see him on passenger lists) and whether when he went out to Africa, was he with the West Kent Yeomanry? He went to Africa along side his brother but cant find anything on him either. Grandad was 'Claude' William Laurence Champion, born Lamberhurst 1881 and his brother was Sidney about 5 years younger. Any suggestions, gratefully received.

I am trying to piece together my grandad's time in Africa. I know he went to the 2nd Boer War and that he was in the British South African Police (Rhodesia) before emigrating further to join the Canadian Mounted Police. I have no dates from when he went to Africa, what regiments(?) he was attached to, how he travelled there (the route) or when he left. His name was 'Claude' William Laurence Champion born 1881. I understand he went with his brother Sidney Champion who was approx 6(?) years younger but info on him is even harder to find.
The reason I ask about the West Kent Yeomanry is that when my mum died she left me various trinkets one of which was a West Kent yeomanry badge with a horse on its hind legs with invicta underneath. Was this my grandads? Did he sign up for the W Kent Yeomanry to go out to Africa? Any pointers would be gratefully received.

Canada / Homesteading in British Columbia
« on: Monday 21 March 22 23:45 GMT (UK)  »
I have just discovered that my grandfather took part in this scheme in North Bend, British Columbia. I had always known that he lived in Canada for a while but apart from knowing that he had been with the Mounties, he had also been a cook on the railways. I read a book about homesteading and wondered if he had any connection with it when it said that many homesteaders also worked on the railway to supplement income. I have looked on the Canadian archives and found reference to CWL Champion Part: Portion NW, Section: 11, Township: 11 (assume this is North Bend) Range: 26, Meridian: W6, Folio: 272, Liber: 696, Microfilm reel: C-6492, Item no: 456089. Is there a way to find his application online? Is there any more info online? I find the whole archive website a bit overwhelming and don't know how to use it. Would appreciate some help  :)

The Common Room / Family tree templates
« on: Tuesday 23 November 21 23:41 GMT (UK)  »
I have my family tree information in various documents and I initially started creating a family tree using excel by inserting boxes each time I found a family member. The trouble is, it is becoming unwieldy as the lines cross over for intermarriages and sometimes there are too many children to fit in the space and not only that, because of the amount of information, it can struggle to load.

Could anyone recommend a software package that is up to the job? I would like to be able to add supplementary information on some of the ancestors in a note attached to their record. Thank you for any recommendations!

Kent / Institution, Hog Lane, Whittaker Street, Chatham
« on: Monday 06 January 20 23:26 GMT (UK)  »
Was trying to find my GG grandmother Esther Sanders in 1841 census and there is a likely candidate aged 10 residing in Hog Lane, Whittaker Street, Chatham alongside (presumably) her mother Sarah Sanders aged 50. Does anyone know what the institution was? I have had a look on street view and can see that there is a Salvation Army building there with the date 1890 but I wonder what was there in 1841?

Europe / MALTA - advice needed!
« on: Tuesday 19 April 16 18:01 BST (UK)  »
I am going on holiday to Malta very shortly and would dearly love to be able to find a record of the birth (baptism) of my GGG grandmother, Rose Bell, who was born in Malta in 1807. I have tried several times to email St Paul's Pro-Cathedral in Valetta to ask if I could access their archives, but have had no response. Does anyone have any experience of looking up archives in Malta? I am assuming that she was the child of a serviceman as there were several regiments and naval personnel based there at the time. The next mention I have found of her is in Kent, England, getting married in 1824 in an Anglican church. I have no idea who her parents were and was hoping that if I found a baptism, it might give a me a clue!
