New Zealand Completed Requests / Children's homes/orphanages in Wellington 1920s
« on: Thursday 12 June 14 08:24 BST (UK)  »
I have one of those brickwalls to break down.
I am looking to find where three children who came to Wellington, NZ in 1922, without their parents, ended up living. Thelma Maude born 1910, Ethel Helen born 1907 and Harry Kenneth Hardacre born 1913 arrived on the Moeraki at Wellington 30 Oct 1922. Their mother, Maude Mary Hardacre nee Mayer had died in 1913 in Wagga NSW, 10 days after Harry's birth. Their father John William Hardacre died in Balmain, Sydney in 1932.  The puzzle is why did they come and who looked after them until they were adults ? Older children were left behind in Australia.
How many childrens homes/orphanages were there in Wellington at that time and if they went there, does anyone know where I can source the records.
no family stories have been passed on, so may have been a very traumatic time for all three children.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Trying to identify a grandmother
« on: Friday 16 August 13 09:14 BST (UK)  »
I have a photo of a young lady supposed to be Emma Mixter nee Brown born 1852. Photo taken in Ipswich by H Walters.  Emma married Joseph Mixter in 1870 and died in 1877 after the birth of son Arthur.
A restore may date her clothing to see if I have the right person.
Otherwise I suspect she might be Eliza Brown (no relation) born White Notley 1841.
The second photo is not very clear and with a restore may be easier to see her dress. Photo undated and unnamed taken by G Brown & Sons, Deal
Many thanks in advance

Lanarkshire / Glasgow marriage
« on: Friday 08 October 10 06:47 BST (UK)  »
Looking to confirm a marriage between William Goode and Marion Shaw, married 5 June 1882 Glasgow according to the NZ birth certificate for one of their children Andrew Falconer Goode born 1897, Green Island NZ.
I have tracked 7 children born in NZ between 1884 and 1897, so presume that they emigrated to NZ between 1882 and 1884.
Cant find exact date of emigration but still searching.
Name varies in NZ from Goode to just Good so makes for an interesting search.
William was 47 and Marion 44 on the birth cert of 1897.

Scotland / Scottish naming
« on: Thursday 09 September 10 06:53 BST (UK)  »
I am researching Andrew Falconer Good born 1898 somewhere in Scotland but interested in his second name Falconer. Can someone remind me of how the naming rights go. Would this be his mother's mother's maiden name or could it be his father's name ie there is no father named on the birth certificate.

Scotland / How"good" are you
« on: Wednesday 08 September 10 10:33 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace Andrew Falconer Good born about 1898 somewhere in Scotland. Family stories say there is no father's name on his birth certificate but his mother may have been a servant working at a big house.
At some stage, Andrew emigrated to NZ - still looking for a date but possibly 1922, and then in 1922 he married Margaret Alice Snowdon. He died in Timaru, NZ in 1969.
Margaret may also have been born in Scotland, about 1902. She also died in Timaru NZ in 1941.  Can find her birth in NZ or England so possibly also scottish.

Any ideas anyone ?

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1861 Census
« on: Sunday 29 August 10 09:56 BST (UK)  »
Could I have a check done on the 1861 and 1871 census for Amy Sarah Gallington born 1858.
Her parents were George Joseph and Sarah Gallington. George married Sarah in 1855 but died in 1859 so missed a census check. In 1861, Amy appears (I think) as Sarah and Sarah her mother is also listed. By 1871, she is back as Amy living in Epsom but Sarah has either died or married, or just living with someone. Cant find any marriages between 61 and 71. The Sarah Gallington married in to William Stannett in 1874 is Sarah snr's sister in law.
Amy shows as A Gallington in 1881 and is married to James Cole in 1885.

London and Middlesex / Searching for Benjamin Gallington
« on: Wednesday 18 August 10 10:24 BST (UK)  »
I have done well so far with Benjamin Gallington born 1824 - gt gt gt grandfather .
His father was also Benjamin Gallington born abt 1781 and married to Elizabeth Levett. I am trying now to find this Benjamin's father and would appreciate any ideas. There was also another Benjamin born 1818 died 1820.
I have found a Benjamin married to an Elizabeth Brotherick 1731 and their son was Benjamin Bratherick(Brotherick?) born 1735. Cant find his marriage but could there be another Benjamin/s in between Benjamin born 1781.
There is also a Joseph Gallington also married to an Elizabeth who had a son Benjamin born 1736.
The names Joseph and Benjamin have been carried down the line for a while so I am supposing there has to be some connection. Just missing a few bits between 1736 and 1781. After that I am fine as the census and bmds have filled in the other gaps.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Professional Swimmers - London area
« on: Tuesday 06 October 09 10:09 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know about professional swimmers in the London area about the 1890s. I have just obtained a marriage certificate for one of my relations which showed her father's profession as professional Swimmer.
In the 1881 census he was just a warehouse man .  Mary Annie Robinson married Walter Gallington 1899.

His name is William Edwin Robinson born about 1850 in Shrewsbury, but lived in Hackney. He died in 1891 age 42. Another relation had sent me a photo of a older man with lots of cups and Medals thinking it was another grandfather, William Gallington, but I think it was William Robinson.

Any ideas
