« on: Monday 20 November 23 06:50 GMT (UK)  »
The book has been published.

For everyone who has put up with me over the last 13 years. Thank you.

It was never my idea to publish Billy Freeman's story I just wanted to know about his trials.

But somehow through this amazing website I met his Sisters nephew - who wrote the book

The advanced copy landed in my letter box today. So with great delight I say a big fat THANK YOU

Special thanks to Cando

I received this message this morning and I am not sure the time line works. The person who sent me this message may just "wish" this is the father of the ancestors related to her.

The message is as written:
HI, I am researching my husbands great aunt Grace Beatrice Haynes. Seems she was married to Albert George Walkerden. But you do not seem to have her in your tree. Seems like it was a short marriage. He seems like a rouge, if family trees are right. My question is, When you say this he was also know as McGowan and married to both Isabella and Charlotte. Can you tell me how you know this? I have looked everywhere. 6 Oct 1911 Collingwood, Victoria, Australia Both Isabella and Charlotte gave evidence of marriage. Walkerdon also used the alias McGowan

So my timeline is that WALKERDEN married Annie HOOKER in 1891. They had 2 children and he deserted her somewhere around 1903-04.
In 1905 he married Isabella SMITHERS.
In 1904 he was in court because of a Miners claim - the court case was in Heidelberg.
According to the newspaper article dated Friday 21 July 1905 he lived with HOOKER until May 20 Last* and left her to marry another as Frederick George McGOWEN on 20 July 1905.

If he fitted Grace Beatrice HAYNES in the middle of these 2 marriages he was a fast worker. Help needed - its doing my head in.

Thanks for all the previous help from everyone, cheers Ted.

*Not sure if "Last" means the same year or the previous year.

Australia / Help - Why did women end up in Tasmania in the 1830's - 1840's?
« on: Monday 10 April 17 04:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to find out how a lady who was having children in the 1840's in Hobart, Tasmania, arrived in Australia. All records of her later in life say she was born in Suffolk, England.

I cannot find her as a convict, and I cannot find when the father of her children arrived in Tasmania. I cannot find the couple arriving together. However, the man is a shipwright.

Anyway, just a question that might put me on a new track.

Cheers, Ted

Australia / Is this the same woman? - Victoria Australia 1880's
« on: Sunday 02 April 17 14:11 BST (UK)  »
I'm helping my distant aunty Elaine - we know we are related because my Aunty married her cousin,  but her family came to Australia about 100 years before I did. I thought you might be able to help us solve a family mystery.

We know her grandmother became a ward of the State in Victoria some where in the late 1880s or the early 1890's. 2 of her brothers are also Wards at the same time. Her name was Elizabeth Annie BANKS or ANDERSON (from the index of the register) there are also 2 of her brothers Robert and Thomas on the same index.

I want to find the reason why, so I have tracked her great grandmother and most of the siblings, and made this chart - I hope it makes sense as the mother's name changes.

BANKS CHILDREN - THOMAS IS THE FATHER ON ALL RECORDS

ANN    b1883 d1887 Mothers name at birth Euphemia Anderson mothers name on death Kate Ramsay Ann died aged 4.
THOMAS   b1885 mothers name    Katie Ramsay   haven't found death yet.
ANNIE ELIZABETH b 1887   d1962 Mothers name at birth Kate Anderson    mothers name at death Annie Ramsay
ROBERT b1889 d 1918 Mothers name on birth Kate Anderson Mothers name on death Ramsay
STEPHEN   1892   1951   Mothers name on birth Cath Euphemia Anderson   name on death is Euphimia Anderson
1892 police gazette article - Thomas is charged with deserting as he leaves Euphemia with 4 children in Albury.

I am presuming the children that he deserted are Thomas, Elizabeth Annie, Robert and Stephen. Elizabeth, Robert and Thomas ended up in care but I am unsure of the date.

She went on and had at least 2 children where Thomas is named as the father.

John in 1898 mothers name is listed as Euphemia Anderson (haven't found death yet)
William in 1901 mothers name is listed as Kate Ramsay - William died under a year old and his mother at death is also Kate Ramsay.

I have found a birth certificate for Euphemia Anderson with a mother whos name is Euphemia Ramsey (or Ransey)

Ask all the questions you like - this one is worse than the cryptic crossword.

Thanks for reading,

cheers, Ted

I know it is a long shot but Australia is a long way away and I need help with this one.

Thanks for reading and hopefully helping, Cheers Ted

Australia / Isabella Robinson b 1869?
« on: Sunday 24 April 16 14:02 BST (UK)  »
James Dansey was born on January 31, 1891.

On his birth certificate – (The facts are as the informant presented them)

Born in Williams Street, South Yarra, Albert Park City of Melbourne.

His father was stated as James Dansey, Shipping Agent  age 35 (b 1856)  born in New South Wales.

His mother was stated as Isabella Robinson age 22 (b 1869) born in New South Wales.

Marriage of parents 11 Feb 1890 NSW – no previous issue (not previous children from marriage)

Informant: Margaret Shine, Carlton (written in a different handwriting – Allow ???? time made as by law required) – I think this means that the birth was registered late and it was allowed by law a fine might have been involved - but please correct me if I am wrong.

The birth was registered 6 April 1891. This is 65 days after birth – 5 days over the legal requirement?

I cant find his parents, although I can find Margaret. Was there a relationship between Margaret and Isabella or did Margaret run a house for un married mums - please help I have been looking for answers for the last 6 months and am at a loss.

Thank you for reading,

Luv Ted
