One Name Studies: N to S / Rimmer Southport(Ormskirk) 19thC
« on: Monday 23 May 05 22:17 BST (UK)  »
Anyone with an interest in this name/area really should pay a visit to St. Cuthbert's church at Churchtown. Just about every other gravestone is a Rimmer! Lots of quite old stones still surviving, but the dreaded 'strimmer' has been at work and the cuttings are covering them fast.
Spent a geat afternoon finding some of my ancestors thereand theres a great pub right next to the church gates!
Have fun.

The Common Room / Twins registered 1902-confused!
« on: Tuesday 26 April 05 20:09 BST (UK)  »
Anyone clarify this? I think I've found reg. for my grandmother and her sister, both in Sept.qtr 1902, same district, same volume, but different pages. Is this likely?
Didn't know they were twins but can't find any other registrations that fit! They are  Edith (Olive) Hewitt,  West Derby 8b 715 and Alexandra May Hewitt , West Derby 8b 699 .  Only knew Edith by that name, but suppose she could have had a middle name, although not shown on her marriage cert. Can anyone explain any of this?

Lancashire / Edith Hewitt-Liverpool Toxteth Park
« on: Wednesday 20 April 05 14:57 BST (UK)  »
Recently got a marriage cert. for my grandparents.
Joseph Beddall (age 22)Edith Hewitt (21) at Toxteth Park 5.4.1926.
Need to be sure about Edith's birth. Her father was a carter, named Joseph, living at 20 Belvedere Road. On the sites I've accessed there are several Edith Hewitts all born around the same time. Any suggestions other than sending for birth certs for all? Knowing my luck they'd all have fathers called Joseph!

Managed to find Joseph Beddall's father on the 1901, as he was a flour miller,a more unusual occupation (also called Joseph- I'm overrun with them!)  They were in Wolverhampton.

Any help would be great--I'm going round in circles.
Cheers

Lancashire / Confusing mariage cert.-Sourbutts/Potts
« on: Tuesday 29 March 05 13:58 BST (UK)  »
I've just received a marriage cert. from the GRO (only 10 days over Easter, they're getting better!)

The bride is Elizabeth Ann Potts ,full age(just my luck!) WIDOW, father Thomas Potts deceased!!
If she was a widow, surely her father's name would be different to the one she gave for herself at her marriage?
There is also a witness, Mary Jane Potts.
Is it possible that because she had already been married, her late husband's name would be shown instead of her father? She was married by license,if that makes a difference.
Any ideas?
