Armed Forces / Royal Navy Service Record Help Please.
« on: Tuesday 22 August 17 18:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks, I'm not really clued up on service records and hope someone can just confirm that I am on the right track.

On this service record, the column headed "Ships' Names" lists each entry as "Pembroke", am I right in thinking that this is a Naval Base of sorts and not the actual vessel name as there is no mention of HMS Galatea, which I know he was aboard at the time of the 1871 census.

The next column is headed "NO" which I assume is the ship number.  I have found a website for Mercantile Ships that allows me to enter the ship's number and it returns the ship name but can't seem to find one for Royal Navy Ships.  Does anyone know where I can get that information?

Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated.

Leitrim / McCormack/Christy Drumkeeran
« on: Saturday 25 January 14 22:15 GMT (UK)  »
I got this marriage on RootsIreland.

Date of Marriage: 04-Mar-1855
Parish/District: MANORHAMILTON MARRIAGE BANNS.
County: Leitrim

                      Husband            -  Wife
Name:             John McCormack -  Bridget Christy
Address:          Innismagrath      -  Innismagrath
Denomination:  RC                    -  RC

I was a wee bit disappointed that the parent's names were not on there but I'll leave that headache for another day :)

John and Bridget had 5 children...

Myles    1861
John     1864 Registration District: Drumkeeran
Bridget  1867 Registration District: Drumkeeran
Thomas 1869 Registration District: Drumkeeran
Anne     1872 Registration District: Drumkeeran.  Address: Greyfield, Innismagrath.

The family move to Glasgow sometime after 1872 and all but John Jr and Anne appear on the 1891 Census.

My problem is Myles, my G Granda, I cannot find a birth or baptism for him at all, which is strange as the others are all on RI and FS.  In all likelyhood, he was born in the same place as his siblings but I hate loose ends and thought I'd turn to you guys.

Also, I'll be visiting Drumkeeran soon, would the local church provide the information of a baptism do you think?

Thanks for reading.

Antrim / Nelson Grave Ballymena
« on: Thursday 23 January 14 01:54 GMT (UK)  »
I'm visiting Ireland next week and will be stopping in Ballymena, sadly I only have one day there to find which Cemetery my Nelson family are buried.  I have a photo of the grave but it doesn't say where.

What I do know is...

John lived With his family at 41 James Street until he and Margaret married on 26th Dec 1900 then they both lived at 69 Larne Street with Margaret's parents (McLean).  In 1911 they have their own place in Alfred Street.

Until the other day, I presumed they had stayed in Alfred Street permenantly but my Mother has since told me that she visited them in the early 1950s and she remembers them living in a cottage in the countryside. She also thinks she remembers her Mother saying that John, who used to be a Labourer and Sawyer became a policeman.  I'm wondering if maybe they moved into police accommodation but doubt that would be a cottage in the countryside, I don't know.

She is also quite sure that John was a member of the Orange Order in Ballymena. Would contacting Orange Order help do you think? I'm not so sure that is the kind of information that would be given out mind you.

I don't know when either of them died, which really doesn't help narrow things down either.  I'm sure i'll enjoy my visit whether I find the grave or not but would love to have visited.

Thanks for reading, any advice in how to approach this would be greatly appreciated.

Wicklow / NOLAN Nicholas Bray
« on: Friday 06 December 13 01:05 GMT (UK)  »
I'm really struggling with this and wondered if anyone can point me in the right direction.

I'm researching...

Nicholas Nolan B:1878 Bray
Father - Daniel Nolan B:c1840
Mother - Bridget Neil

I have him on the 1901 census as living in Bray No2 with other family members but would like his birth information.

There is a civil registration index entry on FamilySearch that matches the name and the birth year but the Event Place is Rathdown, which put me off but I've since discovered that other people born in Bray have their Event Place as Rathdown too.

I've tried Roots Ireland but their is no entry for him, could anyone with a wee bit more knowlage advise me where should I go from here?

Thanks in advance.

Wicklow / Rathdown, which County?
« on: Thursday 05 December 13 22:48 GMT (UK)  »
I've just started trying to trace my Husband's G Grandfather Nicholas Nolan who, we are told, came to Scotland from Bray, Co Wicklow.

I've managed to find a Nicholas Nolan born in 1878 in Rathdown, which doesn't look that far away to me but I am getting both Co Dublin and Co Wicklow, can anyone confirm which County it belongs to?

Thanks in advance :)

Kerry / Dinneen/Moynihan marriage 1867
« on: Wednesday 28 November 12 13:45 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for a bit of advice on the following marriage...

06/02/1867 John Dinneen and Mary Moynihan. Ballynird, Castlegregory.

This is a second marriage for both John and Mary and Mary's father is noted as John Johnson.  Does that mean that Moynihan was her first husband's name and Johnson was her maiden name?

It may seem obvious  but I just want to check as the only other second marriages I have seen usually have the maiden name first.

Thanks in advance :)
