I'm interested in farms and farming families in Ayrshire if anybody is able to provide further information.

Thomas Wyl(l)ie and Jean Morton.  Banns in April 1806 at Craigie by Kilmarnock (Jean's parish) and Kilmaurs (Thomas).

Their children were James bn Dec 1806 and christened at Craigie, George bn Dec 1808 Bowhouse farm, Mary bn Symington 1811, Margaret bn 1813 Dunlop, Thomas bn 1817 Dunlop,  David bn June 1819 Stewarton and Jean bn 1821 Stewarton.  They farmed around Stewarton, and for several years prior to Thomas’ death in 1844 at Caddell farm in Ardrossan. There is an East Muirshiel farm at Dunlop which is where two of the children were born.

On the 1841 Census Thomas, George, and Jean are at Caddell farm together with a Jane Wyllie who is the same age as Jean.  Holmbyre farm which adjoins Caddell also had Wyllies there. I'm not sure that they were related but would love to find out.

Jean married James Whiteford in Campbeltown in 1849 and they emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria with George and his wife, Mary Leggart, following soon after.

John married Rachel Taylor and they emigrated to the US, farming in Wisconsin.

Margaret married Robert Kerr and they remained in Ayrshire, with family farming at High Lynn (Kerrs there on the 1891-92 Valuation Rolls), and Giffordland mill also Dalry and Cranberrymoss (sometimes Cranberry Moss), Kilwinning.

Mary married John Dick and John Wylie may have married Elizabeth Sawyers.

Skellyhill farm may have been associated with Jean Morton's family.  An article on James and Jean's golden wedding anniversary in Melbourne mentions Skylahill which may be Skellyhill farm.

I would be really pleased to hear back from anyone who knows of these families or the farms they worked.

Ayrshire / Anybody with access to Kilmarnock and Loudoun pre 1855 MIs?
« on: Thursday 10 September 20 11:50 BST (UK)  »
I'm interested in any listings for Wyl(l)ie and Morton.  Thomas Wyllie and Jean Morton banns were declared at Craigie by Kilmarnock (Jean's parish) and Kilmaurs (Thomas) in April 1806. Their son George was born at Craigie in Dec 1806.

I visited Scotland before the Church at Craigie was sold and closed off.  I couldn't find any trace of either surname in the graveyard next to the Church (although I did get some lovely late afternoon photos across the graveyard and Church).

On IGI there is a Jane Morton christened 13 Apr 1779 at Craigie, father Thomas Morton and mother Mrs Thomas Morton (very useful).

There is also a Jean Morton born about 1783 with a spouse Thomas Wyllie and a child Mary bn 1811 in Symington.

If anybody has access to the MIs I would be very appreciative of a check of these surnames.

Thanks Anne

Antrim / Whiteford and Kane
« on: Monday 30 April 18 14:07 BST (UK)  »
James Whiteford was baptised in Culfeightrin Parish in May 1826.  No record of his mother but his father was Alic Whiteford.  A couple of weeks later he is listed on the Scottish OPRs for Campbeltown Argyll with parents, Alexander Whiteford and Margaret Kane/Cain.  In January 1852 he's again on the OPRs being baptised in Campbeltown with his daughter Mary Reid Whiteford immediately prior to emigration to Melbourne Australia.  His death record in Australia also confirms his parents and that he was born in Ireland.

A researcher of Whiteford families in Antrim believes there were a number of Whiteford families from Cross Townland in the Fair Head area, close to Ballycastle (Culfeightrin Parish).  He's posted that "I know there were Whitefords in that area as early as 1740 when John Whiteford was listed in Culfeightrin in the Protestant Householders' Returns.  There is a headstone in the Culfeightrin Church of Ireland Cemetery for Alexander Whiteford of Cross (1745-1821) and another in the Bonamargy Old Friary Cemetery (Culfeightrin) for Archibald Whiteford of Gartalorkan (1760-1809).  It is quite likely that Alexander and Archibald are sons of John.  Alexander (1745-1821) was the father of a Robert Whiteford (from the headstone) and also Alexander Whiteford (c1790-1867) who married Isabella Mathers about 1818 (2nd marriage) and migrated with his family to St John's in Newfoundland in 1850.  Information I have found about the Newfoundland family says that Alexander  (1745-1821) "had been among the first adherents of the Church of Ireland to open their doors to the celebrated Methodist evangelist Gideon Ouseley", and Alexander (1790-1867) "was engaged wholly to the work of the Methodist church in a lay capacity as circuit steward and trustee" and his family was described as a "close-knit Ulster and Wesleyan Methodist family".

There was also a Mary Whiteford (c1775) who married John McBride in the Fair Head area about 1800, and this Mary may have also been a daughter of Alexander (1745-1821).  A number of the children of their son John migrated to New Zealand and were all said to be from the Fair Head area."

My James Whiteford born May 1826 whose father was Alexander Whiteford had a brother named Archibald who I have not been able to trace in Ireland.  Lots of the same first names in this group from Fair Head.  I have records of Archibald's family living on Skye and Raasay from the 1840s on.  James is also listed on the 1841 Census with his mother and sister Catherine and Margaret.  Catherine married Donald Galbreath of Gigha and Margaret never married. They died in Argyll.  I have not been successful in finding Alexander or Margaret Kane/Cain's death records in Scotland.

I am interested in finding anything out about the Whitefords of Fair Head to see if my Alexander, his sons Archibald and James fit into this family. I am also interested in finding out about the family Kane/Cain in Antrim.

Thanks for any help.

Hi all, I'm interested in the family of Archibald WHITEFORD born 1819 in Argyll whose parents were Alexander Whiteford and Margaret KANE. Archibald married a Flora MCLEOD from Raasay (daughter of John and Jane McLeod) in 1849 and had 3 children with her, Alexander born 1850 Strath Inverness, John born 1854 and Archibald born 1856 (possibly Kintail Ross and Cromarty). Archibald subsequently married a Mary MACDOUGALL (daughter of Alexander MacDougall & Ann MacDonald) in 1858 in Raasay and had 4 other children, Margaret Ann Whiteford born 1859 Raasay, Alexander born 1861 Raasay, Archibald born 1865 Portree and Donald born 1866 Portree. The children of these couples married MCISAACS, PEACOCK, MCKENZIE and MCLARENS.

There were Whitefords in Skye until at least the 1960s.  I was there a couple of weeks ago and spent time at the Highlands Archives and have scans from the newspapers of Peter Whiteford (nickname "Grey Hen"), "Ginger" Whiteford who I am told drowned in Portree Bay one night, and two Peacock brothers who were POWs during WW2.  Peter Whiteford was in a photo of people mending bag nets in Portree in the 1950s from the West Highland Salmon Fishing Co Ltd business papers.

My connection to the Whitefords is that Archibald had a brother James who emigrated to Australia in 1852. I'm descended from James.

I would be very pleased to make any connections.

Cheers all Anne

I posted previously about these families, but not for some time, so I thought I would put my more updated information out for comments, hoping to make connections.

Thomas Wyllie/Wylie and Jean/Jane Morton - banns at Craigie by Kilmarnock and Kilmaurs in May 1806.  Jean's father may have been Thomas Morton, possibly from Craigie.  Their children were:
James born Sept 1806 Craigie;
George born Dec 1808, christened 4 Dec 1808 at Craigie;
Mary born 09 Jan 1811 at Symington;
Margaret born 12 Feb 1813 christened in Dunlop;
John Wylie born 18 April 1815, christened in Dunlop;
Thomas born 14 May 1817, christened in Dunlop;
David born 22 Jun 1819  Stewarton; and
Jean born 16 Sept 1821 Stewarton.

Jean married James Whiteford (born Antrim, Ireland 3 May 1826, christened Campbeltown, Argyll late May 1826) at Mid Glencraig farm near Campbeltown in July 1849.  This was her brother George's farm.  James and Jean emigrated to Australia in 1852.  They are my great, great grandparents.

George, his wife Mary and their children followed James and Jean to Australia in the late 1850s with George farming at Wild Duck Creek in Victoria.

John married Rachel Taylor and they emigrated to the US, with John farming in Wisconsin.  On the 1880 Census they are in Leeds, Colombia.  John died in 1890.  Their children included George born about 1848 and Rachel 1850 in Campbeltown.

I have Thomas Snr, George and Jean at Caddell Farm Ardrossan on the 1841 census. The other Wyllies listed there include George's wife, Mary Leggatt (born 27 Dec 1825 at Craig Dow, Loch Head, Kirkoswald, Ayr) and children, apart from Janet who is the same age as Jean and couldn't possibly be Mary Leggatt's daughter.  Thomas died in 1845 or 46 and I have a copy of his inventory from Caddell farm.  This says his oldest son is George so I am not sure whether James died or possibly emigrated as did a number of Thomas & Jean Wylie's children.

Margaret Wyllie, Jean's sister, married Robert KERR.  This family farmed Giffordland Mill, High Linn, Dalry and Cranberrymoss (sometimes Cranberry Moss), Kilwinning.   Robert Kerr (i) b.1808 married  Margaret Wyllie 25 May 183 d. 12 Nov 1880. Their children included:
Jane 1838;
Margaret 31 May 1840,
Mary 24 Jul 1842,
Robert 16 Nov 1844 who married Elizabeth HAMILTON.
Janet born 18 Apr 1847 married Archibald GRAY 23 Dec 1875 died 21 Sep 1935.  Archibald GRAY born 01 Jan 1841 died 22 Apr 1918 (second wife).
John born 02 Sep 1849;
James  01 Mar 1852;
Elizabeth born 25 Jun 1854.

Robert and Elizabeth Hamilton's children included:
James b. 1866 d. 5 Jan 1896;
Elizabeth b. 1869;
Robert b. 1872;
Mary b. 1875 d. 04 Jul 1885;
John b. 1878 d. 04 Jul 1885.

I hold a number of OPRs for the Kerrs and they are at Giffordland Mill for most of the time, with the Valuation Roll for 1875-76 showing a Robert Kerr as occupier on both Giffordland Mill and High Linn (possibly his son Robert??? at High Linn).

I would be very keen to hear back from anybody with connections with any of these families.  I have been lucky enough to make connections with descendants of John's family in the US and of George Wylie's family in Australia and would love to make more connections.

I travelled to Scotland last year and drove up to Craigie.  The church was closed, it's up for sale, but I got a number of photos across the graveyard and fields beyond in the late afternoon sun.  It was a quiet, peaceful and very pretty part of the world.  I couldn't find any gravestones for anybody recognisably family.  I will be back in Scotland in about 7 weeks and hope to go up there again.

Dublin / Smythe and Keane or variants - Lucan farming family
« on: Wednesday 07 May 14 13:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi all I have recently received a copy of my great grandmother's marriage certificate.  Her name was Annie Helena Smythe, daughter of Philip Smythe and Mary Keane.  Philip is listed as a farmer on Annie's marriage certificate.  Annie was married in the Catholic Church in Cooktown Australia in May 1883 to James Whiteford.  She is noted as being 21, giving her a birth year around 1862.  However, her headstone in 1938 indicates she was 79 years old making her birth year around 1859.

I'm really keen to make contact with anyone knowing of this family.  I would also be interested in any information about farming families in the Lucan area in the early to mid 1800s.

Thanks all for any advice.

Ayrshire / Ayrshire farming families esp WYLLIE
« on: Friday 30 March 07 09:40 BST (UK)  »
I posted seeking information about 2 years ago about the family of Thomas Wyllie. The only information I had at that time was an IGI listing with the following children:

Margaret Wylie Birth: 12 FEB 1813
Christening: 14 FEB 1813 Dunlop, Ayr, Scotland

John Wylie Birth: 18 APR 1815 Dunlop, Ayr, Scotland

Thomas Wylie Birth: 14 MAY 1817 Dunlop, Ayr, Scotland

David Wylie Birth: 22 JUN 1819 Stewarton, Ayr, Scotland

Jean Wylie Birth: 16 SEP 1821 Stewarton, Ayr, Scotland.

Jean was my g grandmother. She married James Whiteford in Campbeltown in 1849 and in 1852 they migrated to Australia. I have details of the family in Australia.

Margaret married Robert KERR. The information below on that families connections were kindly provided to me by other listers. Robert KERR (i) b.1808 m. Margaret WYLLIE 25 May 1837(?) d. 12 Nov 1880.
Margaret WYLLIE (possibly second wife). Children -
Jane b. 1838
Margaret x. 31 May 1840
Mary x. 24 Jul 1842
Robert (ii) b. 16 Nov 1844 m. Elizabeth HAMILTON.
Elizabeth HAMILTON b. 1845 d. 16 Jun 1888
Janet x. 18 Apr 1847 m. Archibald GRAY 23 Dec 1875
d. 21 Sep 1935 *
Archibald GRAY b. 01 Jan 1841 d. 22 Apr 1918 (second
wife).
John b. 02 Sep 1849
James x. 01 Mar 1852 m. Janet ????? before 1881
Elizabeth x. 25 Jun 1854

I have since found that Thomas was born around 1787 in Dunlop. He farmed at Caddel Farm in Ardrossan (there at the 1841 Census), East Muirshiel and Skellyhill which his daughter Jean referred to as Skylahill in a newspaper article in Australia on her golden wedding anniversary.

The 1841 Census at Caddel Farm lists a Jean and a Janet Wylie separately, born around the same year. There was a family history story about a twin who migrated to the US. I will need to do further research on ScotslandsPeople to see if they were twins or perhaps cousins.

I was lucky enough to find details of Thomas's marriage in April 1806 at Kilmaurs to Jane/Jean Morton daughter of George Morton and Jane/Jean Wotherspoon. I believe George and Jane married in 1754 at the Associate Sessions in Lanark. Their granddaughter Jean mentions in some family documentation that George had a place called Skylahill in Ayrshire. This may have been Skellyhill Farm.

I have found Thomas's inventory following his death on 1 October 1845. He was still at Caddel farm at that time. Because of information in the inventory I found out about George, his oldest son. George was born at Bowhouse on 1 December 1808 and christened on 4 December.

There is still a gap between George in 1808 and the next child shown on IGI, Margaret in 1813 however, I am working on that.

I am interested in information about Ayrshire farming families and especially in making contact with people who may be descended from other Wyllie relations.

I would be happy to share my information, including documentation, with any people with an interest in the family. I am especially interested in finding photos of the family, mentions in local history archives/books or photos of the farms if they exist now. I have a copy of postcard sent to Australia to Jane Wyllie's grandughters and a couple of other items of family interest.

Thaks all

Australia Lookups completed / Smythe from Dublin to Cooktown
« on: Monday 12 December 05 13:14 GMT (UK)  »
Another mystery arrival - looking for ship details about Annie Helena Smythe who married in Cooktown in the 1880s.  If anybody has access to Qld records I be very pleased to hear back about Annie's arrival in Qld.  She was born in about 1853.

Thanks all

I've been trying to trace the arrival of Hugh Mackay (c 1809 to 1886) and Mary (Brennan) c 1820 to 1913.  They married in Athlone Westmeath in 1838 and migrated immediately to NSW.  Mary's death cert shows she was in NSW for 6 years and Qld for 66 years.

They are one of those couples who appear to have swum here because I can find no trace of them either in assisted or non-assisted immigration records in NSW.

If anyone can help me trace them down I would be most appreciative.

Thanks all

Anne
