Australia / Thomas Charles Lenton to Australia
« on: Friday 08 December 23 23:08 GMT (UK)  »
Looking for a date when Thomas Charles Lenton emigrated to Australia. It was 1893 - 97. He was born in Hackney in 1857 and died in Kalgoorie, Western Australia in 1924. My UK-only Ancestry membership does show he appeared on a passenger list but I can't access it. Many thanks.

Armed Forces / Soldier's address
« on: Wednesday 24 May 23 14:42 BST (UK)  »
I have a photo here showing a Great War soldier, and on the back are the details "Archie M. Fraser. Killed in action June 1916". A search on CWGC finds only one record which fits for 1916. His service number was 16822 and he served with the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was 31 years old when he died. I am trying to locate where he lived at the time of his death - any help would be greatly appreciated.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / NEW INN .... but where?
« on: Tuesday 06 September 22 08:15 BST (UK)  »
Slim chance but I'm hoping someone can identify this location. The building in the centre, behind the bushes, has a sign which appears to say The New Inn (I can see 'The Ne ...'). The photo dates to around 1910.

Family History Beginners Board / Companies - registrations and winding up
« on: Saturday 02 July 22 09:34 BST (UK)  »
Are there any online resources to help find out when 19th century companies were first registered for business and / or dissolved? Free would be better than subscription but anything would be a help.

Family History Beginners Board / Suez canal
« on: Tuesday 24 May 22 17:47 BST (UK)  »
I would be eternally grateful for any nudges I could be given in the right direction regarding my dad's military history. I have details of his service record in the navy during the second world war, from 1942 when he joined until his leaving in 1946.
Unfortunately we lost him in 1985, but as a child I remember him saying things about the Suez Canal which have always led me to believe he was on active service there (during the Suez Canal crisis maybe?)
I have membership of Ancestry and of the British Newspaper Archive website, and I've found nothing on Ancestry, but I still consider myself a learner here. Is there anywhere else online where I might have a chance of finding anything? This Suez thing has niggled me for years.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Shoemaker's assistants?
« on: Tuesday 02 June 20 16:45 BST (UK)  »
Looking at the 1841 census, am I right in assuming that the two boys here were 'shoemaker's assistants'?

I would be extremely grateful if anyone could please look at the 1881 census for me. I am trying to find who the occupants were at Lady Mill, Lady Mill Lane, Thornhill parish near Dewsbury, West Riding. I am thinking there should be three cottages there. If someone could supply me with the info I can move forward with my research into that place. Many thanks  :)

The Common Room / Pet cr definition
« on: Wednesday 22 April 20 09:38 BST (UK)  »
Is anyone able to help me with the definition of 'pet cr' with regard to a bankruptcy hearing?
The newspaper account from 1827 gives the details of the person being declared bankrupt, John Taylor of Halifax, innkeeper. At the end it says "Pet cr Thomas Todd, Dewsbury, Yorks, wine & spirit merchant, and his partner". I am assuming that Taylor owed Todd money, but what is the pet cr abbreviation?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Unidentified naval cap badge
« on: Monday 29 July 19 08:54 BST (UK)  »
*** SOLVED! ** Is anyone able to help with identifying this cap badge? The family had naval connections in both wars and the period in between. The badge appears to show a letter C upon a flag, with what looks like a foliage background. Thanks in advance. NOW SORTED!
