yes it does seem a match name and yes Robert does seem to be in aberdeen Scotland and a baby born with the same name as his mother also in aberdeen a year after a marriage in northumberland seems probable. Its as close as we will get unless i ever find a new relative that can can confirm anything.
thanks again for all your help.

There was a funeral director in 1940 with the address "23 Crescent Road. Tel Cheetham Hill 2575".

I thought it odd to be recorded as place of death but Heywood has enlightened me!!

The 1889 YoB of the seaman's record "fits" the 1891 Census entry of Charles W Atkin, age 1, born Spalding. Mother Harriet, status "Mar", is Head of Household - no hubby present..
A James Charles Atkin married Mar Qtr 1882, Spalding - on same page Harriet Tagg.
The 2nd seaman's record has Charles making 8 journeys  on the "Wollaton" from 29 July 1821 to 26 Feb 1924 (last entry). The "Wollaton" arrived in Hull, ballast, from Queenstown Feb27/28th 1924.

There's a merchant seaman record (minimal details) on FindMyPast for -
Chas Wm Atkin, rating AB, born 20/8/1889, Spalding - it includes a photo.

Also a 2nd record - again minimal info.
