The dates are correct Sinann. Relative went to India 1850. The letter was written by a descendant of hers in 1947 to family in England.
The person I am trying to trace is Theresa ??? who married John O'Connor. Their son, Charles Edward was about six months old when they went to live in India. John O'Connor was a civil engineer and Theresa was a lady doctor.
Thanks for the link - I will see what I can find.

I am trying to find the surname of a relative of my husband. From a family letter dated 1947 we know she trained at and got her diploma from Rotunda Hospital Dublin. She then went to India in 1850 with her husband and young son and practised out there.
Can anyone give me any ideas on how to trace her - possibly through a medical directory.
I am hoping that if I can find out her maiden name, I may be able to trace her husband's ancestors in Ireland. Her husband was O'Connor so her maiden name would hopefully narrow down the search!
Thanks for any ideas.

Thanks Shane. The family were RC and we think the parish was St Mary's. It is said that a piece of land was given by the family to the Irish government to build a hospital which still exists today called the Houghton Fever Hospital. It is said that Charles was a doctor, as was his son Ernest Joseph O'Connor.
Thanks again,
Kathy

I don't have birth or marriage details for John & Mary Theresa, but their son Charles (family lore says only child) was born in 1850 in New Ross and died 1904 in India.
Again, family lore says they travelled to India on the same ship as High Court Judge Morad, but I have no date for the sailing.
They are not my family but my husband's. (We have all come to a dead end with John. We don't even know Mary Theresa's surname)
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Kathy

Wexford / Charles Edward O'Connor
« on: Thursday 10 March 11 19:47 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for ancestors of Charles Edward O'Connor born in New ross, Co Wexford (I think).
Parents were John (civil engineer) and Mary Theresa ? (lady doctor or nurse - trained at Rotanda hospital, Dublin).
They travelled to India when Charles was an infant.
Hopefully, someone out there can help.
Thanks,
Kathy
