Hi Kirst

I am from the HOGG side of the family, so we wont share any DNA, unless more cousins married cousins than I am aware of!
With regards which DNA test to get...I have figured out that its probably best to get the Ancestry test as this test can be loaded up to other DNA sites for free ( mostly ) whereas Ancestry will not accept other companies tests.
I took 2 before I knew what I was doing..Ancestry and My Heritage. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Always make up a Tree for any of the sites as this helps in all sorts of ways.
Ancestry has ' Thrulines' which pulls up DNA matches that look like they belong to a particular ancestor...however, this is only as good as the Trees online..I have hundreds of DNA matches but they haven't got a Tree on ancestry so they don't get into Thrulines...or they have made a big mistake in their Tree etc...but for those with good research, its rather exciting to see my ancestors  siblings descendents all set out in a Tree as done by Thrulines. Also Ancestry has, generally, the better Trees to research. It seems to like to frustrate researchers though ( eg, won't count how many matches they have found, whereas MH does! Won't give us a chromosome browser, a basic genealogy tool etc)
My Heritage groups your matches per genomic position on the chromosome. This is really a great tool, however, lots of work always needs to be done on a person if you want to get right into the nitty gritty...I am too old to bother LOL...Trees on MH are usually a disappointment. I usually grab whatever clue is available and head back to Ancestry to research the person.
Gedmatch has some great tests to run for fun ( in my case) and will match your DNA matches with you...MH & Ancestry often fail. I have found many DNA matches on Gedmatch who are also on either Ancestry or MH, yet do not come up as a match on those sites. I trust Gedmatch more :)
If you need further help, feel free to PM me.
Cheers

Sorry Kirst..I read the message the wrong way around! The Gedmatch comment was by someone else who you replied to!...if you have taken a test then it is a great idea to load it onto Gedmatch..its free too! Ancestry doesn't offer a chromosome browser but does have quite good search facilities for DNA matching
https://classic.gedmatch.com/login1.php
The other place thats free is FTDNA..good for finding matches too. The site is a bit basic but its always good to get our DNA in lots of places to find that elusive match that gives us all the answers ( haha).
Cheers

Hi Kirst
Nice to hear from you!
I see you are on Gedmatch...its a chromosome browser and lets you know which chromosome you match on with whoever you are checking.
E.G: Choose ' one to many' to the right of your log in page, then click on the "A" to the left of one of your matches Gedmatch has found for you and up comes a page with noth your kit numbers..scroll to the bottom and hit 'compare',,it will show all your chromosomes and which bits you match with your DNA match. At the bottom, it will tell you how many generations back your common ancestor is.
If your click on the kit number to the left of "A" of that DNA match, you will see all THEIR DNA matches...this is handy to check, perhaps more easily who they have that you might recognise
Start with close cousins to get the hang of it...you will see certain people come up on the same chromosome in the same spot ( genomic position)...you need to write all the info down as you go.
I have found Gedmatch finds you matches but sometimes, even if that person is on say My Heritage or Ancestry, they don't come up as a match on those other sites. This makes the job so frustrating.
You can also run the "People who match both or 1 of 2 kits" test ( on log in page)...this gives you people who are connected to you..you might be related to one person who you share an ancestor with, and the other is related to the other ancestor (W or H), for example.. Gedmatch has videos to watch for a better explanation!!
Are you descended from George and Susannah nee HOGG? If so, I would love to see if we are DNA match. I haven't found any yet to this line
Cheers

Hi Jenny
Lovely to hear from you! I have one DNA match via Deborah and 2 via Sarah ( on ancestry Thrulines)..I have many more dna matches not being picked up yet. A couple of days ago, I played around with the robots on ancestry and moved my James to be the son of Jacob, instead of a brother, and I finally got a couple of my Chromosome 18 dna matches to show up in Thrulines, which had hitherto eluded me. However, they come up as Half rather full relatives as they are via a Deborah born abt 1820ish so I am fiddling around with them as we speak...she is either a daughter of Jacob and his second wife or a daughter of a  son of Jacob's...possibly my James, or his wife ( who I have been trying to guess as I haven't found a marriage for his wife).  My Tree is so mucked up now as a result LOL....Feel free to DM me
Cheers

Hi Leanne
You have done an amazing job working out who John belongs to. There are so many Johns and McCLURES!
I agree about having to make a Tree private. I had a couple of hideous experiences, one woman even has my father on her Tree despite having no idea how we have a very distant dna link..told me her Tree was scrappy, but has 25,000 people on it and locked!
My brother isn't on ancestry but is on Gedmatch,  Ancestry doesn't have a chromosome browser so anyone interested in this has to load their kits onto Gedmatch. There is a petition on changedotorg begging ancestry to relent but it needs a few more signatures.
Ancestry wiped all dna matches with less than 7cM, so when we get back to the early 1800's etc, we are only lucky to get a match on ancestry. We can search as low as 3cM on Gedmatch. Its still difficult, but finding out the exact chromosome the dna match is on is vital, especially with so few records to help us.
I just clicked on all 25 Tree owners for James McCLURE and I don't have a dna match with anyone. I have previously done it for George & Susannah nee HOGG's Trees. An eye glazing exercise, but worth it if a match looms up!
Let me know if you decide to upload your dna kit to Gedmatch..make sure you keep the Gedmatch  kit number in a safe place. You will be surprised how many times you use Gedmatch once on there ( and understand how it works LOL)
Cheers

Hi,
I have Susannah HOGG born to William HOGG & Mary Ann McBRATNEY ( married 1831 Killinchy) who emigrated to NZ 1863 aged 20y with her brother Robert, 19y. Other siblings were already there and they all feature in many newspaper articles on Paperspast. Their brother, Thomas HOGG, arrived 08 Oct 1861 on the same ship, The Royal Stuart, as James McCLURE, wife and child and also P HAYES, wife & chd.
Two HOGG cousins, sons of Hamilton HOGG ( shoemaker) from Killinchy, settled in Christchurch..Thomas HOGG, a shoemaker and James HOGG a miller.

Susannah married George McCLURE on 25 Nov 1870 (wit: Robert HOGG, farmer of Leeston and Sarah McCLURE of Leeston, spinster) and settled in Killinchy, Selwyn, Canterbury, NZ, where they had a number of children. Susannah died 1908. I have her marriage and death cert but not George's death cert but he died 04 Sep 1918 in his 79th year in a terrible car accident after a tree fell on his car. According to findagrave he was born 14 Aug 1838. From a cemetery record, he was the son of David & Jane, nee CRAIG McCLURE who died in the same area. Ros DAVIES site has more clues. George was a friend of Wm GABBIE who emigrated May 1860. George arrived Dec 1860.
I think William HOGG is one of the youngest sons of James HOGG b 1754 died 1816 Ballymacreely, and Susannah HAY b abt 1762, died 1808 Ballymacreely ( both buried Killinchy with 3 young children..see the amazing Ros Davies site).
My brother has a dna match to someone descended from a HAY who has posted here before :)
So I just had a look for Trees and see Kinnigit has this family!! Small world:) Hi Kinnigit!
The names, Susannah and Eleanor/Ellen appear in many branches of the HOGG families. Possibly  HAY names
I am descended from James HOGG, a weaver whose wife is still a mystery, but I have dna matches to his brother Jacob, a baker, probably in Ballynahinch and they are (must be?) children of James HOGG & Susannah HAY. My Great G/M was Susannah HOGG.
I hope this has helped, late to the party though I may be !

Many thanks for those links Kiltaglassan. That is an excellent site.
I am wondering if anyone knows whether records for marriages in the 1700's are still available somewhere?
Regards
Jo

I have found a  mention on Ros Davies site that  James HOGG died 1816 aged 62y ( b abt 1854) and his wife Susannah HAY died 1808 aged 46y ( b abt 1762) both of Ballymacreely, and buried Killinchy First Presbyterian Church.
I believe these are my ancestors who may have had a son Jacob HOGG and a son, James HOGG. If I am on the right track, Jacob HOGG was a baker in Ballynahinch. William BARR of Ballynahinch left 40 quid to Jacob's daughter ' Sally' in his 1809 Will. I found 2 daughters for sure:
Sarah, b abt 1807 who married John HARPER ( I have 2 DNA matches to this line) ( she died New Cumnock, Ayrshire, have death cert which states Jacobs wife was Jane McCALLOW/McCALLA ), and
Eleanor HOGG who married, first, James NOUGHER/NOGHER/NOCHER who was murdered in 1850. Eleanor remarried James JOHNSTON 1856.  I have found some children for her, and her Will
There may also have been a daughter, Deborah HOGG b abt 1803 who married William HARPER. She died 1896 in Clintnagooland. I have found a number of children for her.
There is probably a daughter Susannah HOGG as well as that name was a constant in many descendants family lines including my GGrandmother born in England 1856.
Another Deborah HOGG born about 1820 married Hugh McATEER ( I have many dna matches to this line on Chromosome 18). This Deborah may be the daughter of James HOGG, a weaver, possibly of Long Stone ( 1819 Directory).
I also have dna matches on chromosome 18 for Robert LENNOX and his wife who is shown as Anne HARE, born abt 1765 in Trees online, however I am wondering if the name might be HAY/HAYE/HAYES etc.
I would love to find more details on any of these folk. The LDS offices are closed due to covid, so I can't order any films.
Any help is much appreciated.
Cheers
Jo ( Australia)
