Cornwall Lookup Requests / Re: Cornwall Marriage c 1753

HAve you thought of looking in the Plymouth registers - I do research at Calstock parish archive, which is next door to St. Dominick - and I have found that sometimes people from this area seem to marry in Plymouth.  I wonder whether it was a way of getting round the age limits, or perhaps the girl was already pregnant, or perhaps they eloped to Plymouth, or it could even have been a status thing. It's also possible that they were quaker or other non-conformist which would be harder to track down.

Hi There are good parish records (copies of originals on microfiche) for all the parishes around Tavistock at Tavistock Library... much more reliable than IGI - I don't know whether the library has a list of people who would do look-ups.

The Jago family originate in Calstock parish going back to the 1500s - I am a volunteer at Calstock archive currently researching families dating back to 1500s (through wills and land transactions to confirm relationships - Jago is one of the families I have been researching - but I haven't done the links from 1700s into 1800s yet (focusing on 1500s, 1600s and early 1700s at present)

Just another thought - I've quite often found that people from Castock parish got married in Plymouth.  I'm not sure whether it was a status thing - or alternatively, it was a bit like  running away to Gretna if the marriage hadn't been approved by parents!

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Re: WILLIAMS, STILE, MOON, HAWKIN of Calstock

Hi
You do know that the biggest house in Calstock (town rather than parish) is called Tharsis after the spanish mine?   You don't mention how the Hawkin family fit into the research you're after.  It sounds to me as if they weren't in the parish for very long, so there probably isn't much in the Calstock record to help you.

Hi
I'm a volunteer at Calstock archive, and may be able to answer a couple of points above.  Firstly, (to Carole W) Calstock, being a mining area, had a transient population - so people very often married far away from their original birthplace.  Soph 87 I'm really confused as to why you think they married in Calstock, as there is no immediate evidence of a marriage here?  As Kris has directed you to the Calstock. info listings - these are fairly comprehensive for the latter period (we have a few additional from the 1600s at the archive), and the marriage doesn't appear to be there. The Martyn family in Calstock go back a long way - and there are still Martyn's in the parish now.... BUT be really careful with this surname, because the spelling of Martin and Martyn is completely interchangeable at the time you're looking for.  If you let me know why you are so certain the marriage took place in Calstock I might be able to search some more.
