Staffordshire / WW1 Rowley Regis enlistment help
« on: Thursday 08 May 14 21:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking into individuals who fought in WW1 from the Rowley Regis / Cradley Heath area of the West Midlands. I'd like to know where they may have enlisted, Stourbridge or Dudley possibly. I'd also like to know where they trained and what regiments they were likely to have joined from this area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks
Regards
Kevin

Worcestershire / Wrights Lane / Temple Meadow School

I’m looking for ex pupils or teachers of Temple Meadow primary in Wrights Lane oldhill. I’ve been writing about the history of our school and gained much of the information from old log books which exist from when the school opened on 1st July 1900. I’m looking for photographs, stories however ordinary or extraordinary they are, old school reports, teachers name and what years they taught, I’d be very grateful of any information received. Any information would of course be acknowledged in the final product, I already have a few bits and pieces but I’d love more stories, reports, photos or anything to do with our school.

Linell,

Thanks very much for that, I'll check the log books for your nans name and let you know, if I find her name listed I can scan the page and let you have it, I have the original books from 1900. Edith was living at that address so she wrote that reference from her own home. As I said I said I've been collecting history from our school and anything is greatly received. On that note if you have any photos or anything your Nan may have reference from the school I would be very greatful.

Regards
Kevin

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Sykes / Taylor burial lookup please
« on: Sunday 31 October 10 23:00 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Its brick wall time for me. I'm looking for information on Sykes and Taylor burials.

Philip John Sykes, Born in London in 1850, shows on the 1901 census (age 51). His wife was Maria and was listed as a coal miner in 1901 and living in Rowley Regis. I know his son is buried at Rowley Crem.

Also, Francis (AKA Frank), born in Rowley Regis, married to Olive and listed as a coalminer in 1911, he died in November 1941 and I'm desperate to trace him.

All help greatfully received
Thankyou

I've been researching our local school, now called Temple Meadow, previously called Wrights Lane school. I have two original bound hand written log books from the school dating from the opening in 1900 until 1948 that detaileveryday occurrences, reports, admissions etc.  I'm trying to find any pictures, school reports or any information I can get on the school. I'd especially like some information on the head teachers. Annie L Shuck was the first head mistress until 1908, succeeded by Edith Hannah Gill. I'm keen to find any surviving documentation anyone is willing to share, school reports, photos etc.

Thanks all.

Hi,

No I didn't. What does the book cover and is access available. I know George was responsible for some hangings at Stafford and I believe there is a mention that he had a sone called George too.

Can you shed any further light on the books contents?

Evening All,

Its late, I'm tired but wanted to get this one in before I go off on my hols. I've found my link to George Smith and its what I kind of expected. My link is Bertha Smith (Born 1914), Joseph Smith (Born 1885), James (Born 1855), John (Born 1822), Samuel (Born 1795). Joseph and James are buried at St Giles Church in Rowley, if anyone has any information  on the any of the other Smith burials I'd love to know where they are.

There were 3 brothers (all listed in this thread) born to Thomas and Francis Smith. There was George (Hangman), Samuel (my Great x4 grandfather) and Charles.

I can prove all the above by BMD certs. My special thanks to SmithandJones and Flutterbye for their research, really helped. If anyone has anymore information on any of these Smiths, I'd love to hear from you.

Can't be bothered to spell check this, need sleep, Thanks all, happy hunting ;)

OK All,

Here goes, found my link. The marriage certificate I listed in my last post was wrong. It shoud've been 1878, not 1876. The certificate lists John Smith as James's father, which is what I mentioned in my last post. I visited my late fathers Aunt last week, she was a lovely lady of 97, with a great recollection of her close family.

She said George, the hangman was her great grandfathers brother. George Smith only had one son as far we know and George junior just gets swallowed up by the census somewhere as they travelled around alot. My link is through Bertha - Joseph - James - John (then either Charles or Samuel).

I  now need John's birth certificate and marriage certificate to find out his parents, its either Thomas or Charles, its certainly not George.

My questions for the good people of Rootschat are:

Does anyone know the details of John and his wife?
Can anyone shed any light on where they were married?
Can anyone share any information for Charles or Samuel (George's brothers) That's my connection? This is the big one, I need to know their children ??

I know where Joseph and James are buried, I found James' grave at the weekend.
I've learned to check and re-check my information as my tree has grown, but you can't beat old fashioned talking to people if you have the chance, my fathers aunt had some great stories, you can't get them from the census ;)

Any information, greatly received and I'm more than willing to share any information I have.
