St Mary's Stannington is not the same hospital as Ponteland hospital. There is a short history of Ponteland Hospital in "Pont Island News 2010" - the publication of Ponteland Local History Society - I'll post someting on the society blog.

The hospital started of as "The Work House" and as previous respondants have indicated it eventually became an "outpost" of Newcastle General hospital for elderly patients.

The Stephenson family tree for Geo and Rbt stephenson on the Rbt stephenson Trust website was compliled by Robert Stephenson Roper (dcd) and has a great deal of research behind it - Over 40 years of contact with Stephenson's all over the world lie behind the tree and hence it is correct unless someone proves otherwise

There is a pedigree of Stephenson at................
http://www.robertstephensontrust.com/page10.html

George Stephenson (Famous Engineer) had one son Robert (famous engineer) who died childless. Robert was godfather of Robert stephenson Smyth Baden Powell (founder of Scout movement) - there were rumours that Robert may have been B-Ps father.

Now thats put the "cat amongst the pigeons"- I don't want to confuse this Furness forum with Weallens but this might help - Mary Furness did indeed marry John Weallens in 1922. William Weallens was born on 8th March 1823. Mary was widowed in 1828 and then married William Hutchinson manager of Rbt Stephenson and Co works. Hutchinson got William a start at the locomotive works and ultimately Weallens got Henry D Furness a start at works. BUT I'm facinated about the Rbt Nicholson connection - but thats not for this forum - can a thread be started elsewhere?

I assume you know about the memorial tablets to the 2 Furness clergy which are on the chancel arch of St Mary's Ponteland- I have photos

I suspect you will already realise that William Weallens was a family member and helped Henry get an apprentaceship at Robert Stephenson and company.

"The Rev. John Furness , of Ponteland, in 1822.  William Weallens was born, on the 8th of March, 1823 and subsequently received his education under Dr. Cowan, of the Grange, Bishopwearmouth .

His mother, who was widowed in 1828, subsequently married William Hutchinson who had joined Robert Stephenson and Co.  when the engine works was set up in 1823 and become works manager. It was probably Hutchinson who identified William’s potential as a mechanical engineer and enabled him to become a pupil of his stepfather on 3rd September 1838 apprenticed to Robert Stephenson and Co".

There was an article written in the 1999 edition of 'Pont Island News' published by Ponteland local History Society - see http://www.ponthistsoc.freeuk.com/pinindex.pdf

The full item can be sent in a pdf form after a small donation to the society-however the paper does not contain details of people.

Whilst the  Ponteland Local history Society does not undertake family history research we are always looking to expand our knowledge of our history and would be interesed in hearing about families connected with 'THE COTTAGE HOMES' as it was called - you might also just have something about your family.

Your 'ph' has turned into a 'v'

The 'ph' Stephensons were 'English' engineers mainly associated with 'Railways'
the 'v' Robert Stevenson was a Scottish lighthouse Engineer
