Thanks for the replies

I've been trawling through the 'James Swain's' born in Herts in the 1850's and Middlesex aswell

I've accounted for all of the one's i have found apart from the James Swain living with Mary Swain (Warby) and Benjamin Lowen

It seems that Mary married William Swain. As suggested in Trish's message she is then living with her father in the 1851 census

She then has Benjamin Lowen living with her as a lodger aswell as a James Swain, who's name subsequently changes to James Lowen (It might be the other way around i haven't got the census sheets to hand)

Mary and Benjamin don't get married until the 1880's...........

I think i'll have a go at Trish's suggestion and order the Birth Certificate for the James Lowen born in Edmonton

What i really need to do is try and find out if James Swain & James Lowen are the same person

The James Swain i  am looking for married Eliza Bigg in Islington. Eliza and the Bigg family are from Weston, Herts. On the marriage certificate James father is named as Benjamin, a sawyer, which was suggested as Benjamin Lowen in  a previous message.

At some point in the late 1890's the family moved from the Islington Workhouse. Most of their children were christened in Hitchin on the same day and their abode was stated as the Hitchin Workhouse. James and Eliza's oldest son, James (My Great Grandfather) was sent to live with one of his Aunt and Uncles in Derbyshire, which must have been better than remaining in the Workhouse

Thanks again for the replies

Hertfordshire Lookup Requests / Death of Eliza SWAIN
« on: Tuesday 13 July 10 10:45 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace the death of Eliza Swain (nee Bigg)

Born Weston, Herts abt 1853
Married James Swain in Islington 1878

They had six children :-

James B. 1882
Fanny B. 1886
John B. 1887
Lizzie B. 1892
Daisy B. 1895
Rose B. 1897

About a month after Rose was born all of the children, apart from Daisy, were christened in Hitchin (15/5/1897).

After that date all of the children turn up in workhouses and fortunately for my G.Grandfather James he was sent to live with his Aunt & Uncle.

We can only guess at the moment that Eliza may have died during Rose's birth but have been unable to track down a death certificate for Eliza.

Any help would be kindly appreciated

IGI submitted record suggests a George GIBSON b 1839 has same parents as Thomas GIBSON and born Gainsborough, Lincs (near to Kexby) - very little detail though.

Judith

That's right George is the elder of the brothers. There are 6 in total :-

George B. 1840 Gainsborough
William B. 1843 Kexby
Thomas B. 1844 Kexby
John B. 1846 Kexby
Henry B. 1851 Kexby
James B. 1853 Kexby

George, John & James took over the running of the flour mill, in Kexby, from their father Thomas.
Henry died in 1853
Thomas emigrated to Australia
William we haven't found yet

It was one of those bits of stories that get past down but nobody is quite sure of the details. All we knew was that one of 'The Gibsons' moved to Australia and ran a flour mill. It was supposed to be one of the first things you see, when arriving by boat, in one of the ports. Unfortunately we don't know which port.

It may be that Thomas wasn't the first. I have found information on a mill in Hobart, Tasmania ran by a William Gibson but haven't been able to tie it in yet or find any others. But it's certainly been interesting filling in the gaps in the family

There are four Thomas GIBSONs buried at Williamstown - one has a date 1989, two are shown with two forenames so I guess that leaves one.  There is a map showing where the grave is but no death or burial date (strange!!).

There is, as you say, no death date shown, but I do see, for your interest that the  THOMAS you refer to, Judith, shares the grave with a GEORGE WILLIAM GIBSON.

Location is C of E. 27.5. 005

Sue

That sounds promising as both George & William are names that occur in al of the generations we have found so far.

Thanks
Robert

Hi Robert,
From Victorian BDM
Thomas GIBSON d 1928 aged 84 parents  Thomas GIBSON and  Margaret unknown # 17446
This man fits the age are the parents correct ?
You can download the certificate which should tell you his occupation, children, wife, marriage details and when he arrived in Australia .

Regards
Alison

Thanks for that. Yes his fathers' name was Thomas. We have his mothers' name as Ann (Aisthorp), but we don't know alot about her at the moment and Margaret is a name that re-occurs a few times through the family so i think it's worth a look. Ishall give it a go and let you know

When I was researching at Lincoln archives a while ago, I discovered a death record at Alford from the 1820s of a Gibson an itinerant glass worker, who was buried at Alford. I gave the details to Doncaster Family History Society for inclusion in their strays index. Can't remember his Christian name if recorded, or any other details, but it was published in the DFHS Magazine, period 1998-2005. It was the Yorkshire connection that made me tell DFHS

Thanks for that Much appreciated

Marriage 6 Sept 1813 at Upton
George GIBSON to Mary OLIVANT

I hesitate to mention this marriage as it was quite a distance away http://freereg.rootsweb.com/cgi/SearchResults.pl?RecordType=Marriages&RecordID=1479736

... however, I can only see one child for them in the IGI and that was in 1787.

Thanks the George and Mary marriage would be right as their first son Thomas was born in 1813. The other one is certainly worth looking into further

Thanks for the help
