Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Joel Crookes Oughtibridge, Bradfield

Hi Kath

I think you will find that Joel's wife, Sarah Ashton remarried on the 11th October 1835. She married Thomas Broad (Broadhead) at Rotherham. They had children - William 31 Aug 1836, Thomas 1838 (mother's maiden name Ashton), Maria 1841 plus others. In 1841 they are in Ecclesall Bierlow with your Mary, who is down as Broadhead (aged 10). I think Joel must have been buried at Masbrough Independent Chapel on 4 Jun 1834 (NBI). The entry is just "Crookes" with no forename, but it seems a good fit. If you look for Thomas Broadhead on the 1851 census, you will see that he was born in Masbrough and Mary Anne was baptised in a non-conformist chapel.

I am descended from Joseph Crookes born abt. 1775 in Bradfield - actually twice - from two of his daughters!

Regards
Jenny

It was worth a try. I don't seem to have many matches on that bit of my tree at all, so perhaps I haven't inherited much of their DNA!
Good luck with your search!

I can help you with the Drayton side of the tree if that helps. My ancestors are Joseph Drayton's (1825-1895) parents - William Drayton and Ann Clayton. We could also see if we share any DNA so narrowing down which side of the family your connection is to your match - Beck or Drayton.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Am I doing the right thing?

I did the same thing to find my paternal grandfather. Slightly different though, as I could work out his maternal line from a few strong matches that didn't link to any other lines of my tree. I used ThruLines to confirm everything though. I started getting matches through very quickly once I had added his line to my tree.
The story of how I found my "elusive Bert" is one that I am going to tell for the rest of my life. I am just sorry that my father died before I could tell him - he always suspected that he had changed his name at some point.
Good hunting!!

Well, that is interesting! I think a visit to my aunt is called for to see if she can help solve the problem.

Thanks a lot for your help.

World War One / Help with identifying cap badge
« on: Sunday 25 August 13 13:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello All

I have recently discovered some of my grandparents photos and wondered if anyone can help with identifying the cap badge on this one. I'm sure that may grandfather is sitting on the second row, far right (being leaned on!). The trouble is that I have a card from France signed by him that is embroidered with the motto of the RFA, but this cap badge doesn't seem to be the same.

Thanks and I hope I can attach the picture as it is the first I have tried!

Well, my claim to fame is that my 2xgreat grandfather, Henry Mason, was living a few doors away from Joseph F Johnson in Gilling in 1861. His next door neighbour, William Warters, is probably distantly related to me as well! Yes, I know Gilling was a small place, but you have to grasp at these things!!
