Anglesey / Re: Hugh Hughes of Anglesey
« on: Monday 25 September 23 16:54 BST (UK)  »
Google Books has a copy of "I am a Government Man to Mr Scott of Glendon - Hugh Hughes: From Convict to Free Man" by David Cragg (2015, Australia) which details Hugh Hughes' full story - the theft of the two horses, his flight from Anglesey, the arrest, trial and transportation to New South Wales. The final approx. 170 pages describes his life in Australia. But the book has little to say about Hugh Hughes' family, only that he was born on Anglesey in 1804 to Hugh Hughes, farmer and his wife Margaret nee Prytherick (i.e. Prytherch or Prydderch) and that he was a cousin of William Prytherick of Ty Mawr, Llantrisant, the owner of one of the stolen horses.

As mentioned by Tall Al above patronymic naming was common in rural areas of Anglesey in the early 19th century so we cannot assume that Hugh Hughes' father had surname Hughes.
Prytherch is a much rarer name than Hughes so I've looked for information on his mother Margaret Prytherch.

There was a marriage 18 Dec 1804 at Llangristiolus between Hugh Prichard (Prichd.) and Margaret Prydderch, both otp and ipo Hugh Prytherch and John Knowles.
Then Hugh, son of Hugh & Margaret Prichard of Tyddyn Isaf was baptised at Llangristiolus, 10 Feb 1805. I think this may be the Hugh Hughes we are discussing.

These are the baptisms of some of Hugh's siblings:
Richard, 8 Nov 1807, Llangristiolus - son of Hugh Prichard & Margt his wife.
Anne, 15 Nov 1812, Llangefni - dau. of Hugh Prichd of the parish of Llangristiolus by Margt his wife.
John, 23 Apr 1815, Llangristiolus - son of Hugh & Margaret Prichard, Tyddyn Isaf, farmer.
Mary, 20 Apr 1817, Llangristiolu - dau. of Hugh & Margaret Prichard, Tyddyn Isaf, labourer.
Richard, 23 Apr 1820, Llangristiolus - son of Hugh & Margaret Prichard, Tyddyn Isaf, farmer.
Robert, 12 Mar 1824, Llangristiolus - son of Hugh & Margaret Prichard, late of Tyddyn Isaf now of Llangefni, carrier.

In the 1841 census Hugh and Margaret Prichard, both aged 60, and their son John are at Glan Hwfa St. Llangefni, together with Jane and Margaret, both 30, who may be two other daughters. Hugh is descibed as a coal carrier.

I'm not sure that this is all convincing, but maybe it helps?

Anglesey / Re: THOMAS 1885 from Llangefni, Anglesey - No trace of birth or parents
« on: Monday 16 January 23 12:54 GMT (UK)  »
I haven't found a suitable marriage on Anglesey for Ann Owen/John Thomas either but there is a civil/non-conformist marriage in the Bangor district (O,N,D qtr 1883 Bangor 11b, 888) which could be them.
By the way I think the Richard Thomas you mention from the 1901 census in Liverpool is a brother to John Hugh Thomas, so uncle rather than brother to Owen Hugh Thomas. Richard was born 6 Nov 1867, Llangefni to Hugh Thomas & Ellen Jones.

I looked at this family when I was trying to understand a DNA match I have (with a descendant of Mary Ellen Thomas, Owen Hugh's half sister). I didn't find the connection.

Hi
From a file of birth registrations on Anglesey, Owen Hugh Thomas was born 25 Jan 1885 at Llangefni, the son of John Hugh Thomas and Ann Owen. His brother John Richard Thomas was also born Llangefni 21 Sep 1886.
John Richard Thomas died 28 May 1887 at Llangefni. His death registration describes him as 8 months old, the son of John Hugh Thomas a bill poster.
Anne Thomas died 30 Jun 1890 at Llangefni. She was the wife of town crier John Thomas.

John Hugh Thomas remarried 24 May 1892 at Dinas Chapel Llangefni:
John Hugh Thomas, 29, widower, postman of Church St, Llangefni, son of Hugh William Thomas, independant preacher (deceased) & Mary Roberts, 22, High St, Llangefni, dau of Richard Roberts, platelayer.
I know of two of their children:
Mary Ellen Thomas b. Llangefni 17 Feb 1893
John Richard Thomas b. Llangefni 5 Apr 1894, d. 2 Aug 1894

I believe the following is the birth registration for John Hugh Thomas:
Born 18 Feb 1863, Llangefni - John son of Hugh Thomas and Ellen Jones. The 1871 census for the family at Church St, Llangefni shows a number of John's siblings and his mother Ellen was born at Pwllheli.

The Common Room / Re: Birth Certificate query

I suspect he was not the father as he is not mentioned on the certificate. And because the mother subsequently had a number of children with a second man. The first child believed the second man was his father until he saw a copy of his birth certificate.

Am I right to think that, if a married couple (in about 1920) have a child and before the mother registers the child's birth the father has died, the father's name will still be entered on the birth certificate?

Anglesey / Re: Annie Robert's Rhoscolyn Help!!!

Hi

... have found an Annie Roberts (b.1907) on the General Register Office site. Mothers maiden name was Moxen Vol:11b Page 455 Born West Anglesey. All fits with the new possible fact of Mothers Maiden name....

The Annie daughter of Robert Roberts and Catherine Moxon, born 25 Nov 1907, Coedana is not the Annie you are searching for, she died before the 1911 census. The details of her death registration:
Annie Roberts d. 31 Jan 1909, age 14 months, at Coedana, daughter of farm labourer Robert Roberts. Informant Mary Williams, Tanfynwent, Coedana.

Sorry, I should not have quoted from the 1939 register.

The birth registrations for Thomas Owen and two of his children are in the Anglesey birth index, showing that they were born on Anglesey. The details are:
Thomas son of William Owen & Kate Owen, 13-Jan 1905, Holyhead
Elizabeth dau. of Thomas Owen & Annie Roberts, 10-Feb 1930, Rhoscolyn
Ronald son of Thomas Owen & Annie Roberts, 2-Sep 1936, Llanfachraeth

It seems that Carol Owen and Annie Roberts were not born on Anglesey, I cannot find their birth registrations in the Anglesey birth index.
FreeBMD has a birth for Carol Owen, mmn Roberts, J,F,M qtr 1935, Heywood 8c 618.

On the marraige cert is has his name on it "Robert Roberts (deceased)". The family know he had passed by the time she was married in 1930. But that is literally all they know.
He is also down as having lived in Ty Weryl, Rhoscolyn as last address (according to the marriage cert.
The witnesses ain't as straight forward either. You have a 'William O Jones' and a name I cant make out. The surname is Roberts. Looks like Eirwen of something.

I think the marriage certificate will only show Ty Weryl, Rhoscolyn as Annie's address on marriage, not her father's last address?

I think I have found a possibility for Annie in the 1911 census but I probably shouldn't post details.
If I'm correct her father's name is sometimes recorded as Robert Jeffery Roberts, he is a quarryman in Caernarvonshire and Annie has a younger sister Mair.

PM me if you cannot find the record.

FreeBMD has a birth for Annie Roberts, mmn Jones, O,N,D qtr 1907 Carnarvon 11b, 389 and a marriage for Robert Jeffrey Roberts and Maggie Jones, J,F,M 1907 Carnarvon 11b, 499.
