The Common Room / Re: FRAUD ALERT: URGENT WARNING
« on: Monday 07 March 05 21:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I was really interested to read all of this.  I just read a a message on GenesReunited from a lady who had just discovered a deduction from her account in favour of "Research UK" and she had never heard of them.  I did a search on the web and found that their website was no longer available - but you could get them through Lycos?!?.   I will certainly pass on this information to her.  It scary how easily we can be conned when using the internet, isn't it?!?   Jax

The Lighter Side / Re: Legal age for marriage

I've just received an 1857 marriage certificate which states "of age" in the age column (drat!!) - does this mean that they could have been as young as 12/14 when the couple married!  Were they so much more mature than kids these days??!! Looking at my 14yr old son they would have to be!    :)

Hi Denise
I thought you may be interested to read an article about this topic.  If you go to
www.loyno.edu and then do a search on 'Bastardy' the page you are looking for is 'Bastardy and Baby Farming in Victorian England' - it's an interesting read!!  Thankfully times have changed.
As for telling lies in the census records - I certainly don't think they had a problem with that - I have a family who are different ages on every single census I've looked at!  and it's not just the women!   ;)
Cheers

Hi Kate, thanks for replying.
The birth certificate says he was  born in Newtown, Galbally, Co Limerick.
I'm based in the North East of England with little chance of ever visiting the Dublin GRO - can you search the records online (I can predict the answer to that question is "No").   Do they offer to search the registers for you?
