Louth / Re: Warren/ Hickling (Godbore?) & framework knitting in Drogheda

Hi Andrew
Glad to hear from you. I'd not found Edward Henry in my searches. He hadn't appeared on the 1901 census with Ada & her 2nd husband, John Brown ... only my gt grandfather, Joseph Isaac & 2 brothers born in Hawick, so it would be great to share info. You replied to my entry on curious fox also, which may be easier for sharing files, etc. I'll post a reply there too.
Thanks

Thanks Noblefamilia & apologies for the delay in replying

I didn't get a reply to my last effort @ getting the Irish birth certificate, but will try again soon.

I think there's a good chance your Warren's are the same family as mine. Depending on Samuel's age when he married, he could be a grandson of Philip. My mother always said Samuel & his wife came from Nottingham, but he went over to Ireland to instal framework knitting machines/train people to use them. If his grandfather or father were Irish-born, his employers may have chosen him on that basis.

Please let me know if a Samuel crops up in your research & we can share more info.

I know Samuel & Ada had 3 sons, Joseph Isaac (my gt-grandfather), Francis James & John George. Ada re-married a John Brown in 1897 7 they had a daughter, Mary. Unfortunately these are common names & may not reflect Samuel's siblings or uncles!

Thanks Shane & Aghadowey,
Joseph Warren is the right guy. I'll try again to get a copy certificate & hope it's 3rd time lucky!

Cumberland / Elizabeth Pickering McKnight/Hannah Sutton/Leo Whamboult
« on: Wednesday 07 April 10 12:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I've hit a brick wall trying to trace my gt-gt-gran, Elizabeth Pickering McKnight. Census shows her as born in Whitehaven in 1847, but she had moved away to Middlesbrough by 1869 & there married George Green.
Her marriage certificate shows her father as John McKnight, a miller, but no trace of her birth or earlier census details. 1881 & 1891 census show an aunt, Hannah Sutton, in the household, born 1827 in Workington. Bizarrely, 1911 census shows Leo Whamboult (a property manager in the theatre), born in Hartlepool in 1856, as her brother. No trace of him anywhere either!
If anyone can shed any light on the family, it would be great!
Thanks.

Louth / Warren/ Hickling (Godbore?) & framework knitting in Drogheda

Hi
I've hit a brick wall in my research. My gt-gt-grandfather was Samuel Warren. On 16 June 1878, he married Ada (Godby/Godber/Godbore) in Drogheda & their son, Joseph Isaac was born/baptised on 29 December 1880 in Balbriggan. Later, they moved to Hawick in Scotland 9where 2 more sons were born).
I can find no trace of either the marriage certificate/record (details come from Scottish birth certificates) & by 1897, Ada remarries in her home town of Nottingham. However, she now gives her father's name as Joseph Hickling, but 1901 census shows her sons living with her & their step-dad, so it is same woman.
I can't find any record for Samuel Warren. I know he was a head framework knitter (in Scotland), but cannot find any record of his death, etc., so I don't know if he was Irish or came over from England to train people on the latest machines. Family tales suggest the latter ... with him & colleagues being very very unpopular!
Can anybody help me to track down his details or more info?
Thanks.

Hi Diddy

I think you are right that Mike's 1834 marriage record is likely to be my William & Mary (probably Sarah on the way @ that point!).

Not too sure about the 1856 marriage. although could be a clerical error!

Thanks Diddy

You are right. My Clara's age remains consistent throughout later censuses & on death cert in 1917. Also, all her siblings' names re-appear in her own children's names (not a clincher, but a pretty good omen!)

Wow! Thanks Xin, Diddy & Mike,
Your info is really helpful!
Yes, the 1871 family in Colston Bassett is mine: Mary Elizabeth (gt-gt-gran), John William, Clara L, Sarah M (known in family as Tal) & Ada Emma.
The big problem with poorer families, whose girls go into service, is trying to track their whereabouts pre-marriage. Also, I know from Mary Elizabeth in 1881 census that the householder can put down the current home village for his servants' place of birth, rather than asking them!
William & Mary look like a good bet for Clara's parents, as her eldest girl is Mary & her eldest son has William for his middle name.
Diddy, it would be great if you get a chance to check things in your local library.  It took me a long time & several visits to Colston Bassett & Nottingham to track down John Richards death (1871-81), as the PRO had no record of it ... finally found an almost illegible entry on microfiche for 1875 & (hoping a family tale was true) found newspaper stories of the accident in their records too. Sometimes, even post-1837, local research is the only avenue (but not that easy when you are no longer 'local'!).
Your help is really appreciated.

Leicestershire / Clara (Mary?) White b. 1838
« on: Tuesday 06 April 10 10:07 BST (UK)  »
I've come to a dead end with my gt-gt-gt-grandmother, Clara Richards, nee White. Appears on census 1871 onwards & in birth certs for children + own death certs, as Clara born in Green Hill, Leics. In 1861 census shown as Mary, which is actually the name of her baby daughter. No trace of her birth or marriage. her husband, John Richards, from Colston Bassett, appears to work as agricultural labourer in Hose in 1851 census, which is where both live in 1861 census. Any help would be welcome to get past this brick wall! Thanks!!
