WOW! Impressive summary, glad you think the Boer War fits with James birthdate, sometimes I wonder if I just try to make things fit, and get it wrong because they perhaps don't actually!
Incidentally using the great new "search records" link from within the tree, in Family Search, I found a few prison sentences for James around 1887, one can imagine a warder trying to help him and suggesting when he gets out joining the army, (or is that just fanciful)

So, IF he was a Chelsea Pensioner, (and he would qualify with 13 years army service) that perhaps would account for not showing up in the 1911 UK census, no? (thinking out loud here)
