Hi Sheila
I have been having another look at Antonio Godfrey.
1851 census - has him as a traveler - near Military Rd in Chatham with Edward and Mary Owens. Did you notice that these two are the witnesses at his parents wedding? Are they just friends or related?
In 1861 Mary Ann Owens (wife) is lodging in Chatham, and is " proprietor of a shooting gallery". But no mention of Edward.

I also found  marriage of an Edward OWENS to Mary Ann GODFREY, 17th May 1821 at St Mary's Stoke Newington. And I need to research to see if this fits in anywhere or links the two families. Antonio's uncle?

Joseph Chaves --- There is a certificate of arrival at Dover, from France 1847 . For a Joseph Chavee, profession: Professor, native of: Belgium    Any link?

just a few ideas that i'm working my way through....

hope all is well.

Wow !
Thanks so much for the info. Fortunately, my email was updated a while a go, so I received this today. Pleased to see the "separation" info, that helps understand why I could not find a marriage. And pleased to find the name Joseph Chaves.
Sheila - My husband's family comes via Antonio Godfrey + Mary Wright, Eliza Godfrey +Richard Tillman, Eliza Tillman + William George Baker was his great grandfather( whose brother  George William married Eliza's sister Maud Alice!) .
amondg - Perhaps the father's name of Antonio on the marriage certif was just a cover so he did not disclose the separation of his parents, esp as his mum was living locally and calling herself Godfrey. Doesn't really help when gathering evidence many years later! But i'm glad these two stories have linked and made sense.
Thank you both.

Visiting Gillingham Library sounds a good idea for street directories. I'll look into that.
This week we have been collecting info and trying to plan and decide how best to get the pupils to search. We have decide to give each pair of pupils one house to research and then explore families living at different times.
And using whole street info to look at jobs etc

~Hopefully it grabs their attention and feeds into a love for social history etc. fingers crossed!

thank you for info - the maps are brilliant.
really narrows down the build date to after 1898 and before census 1901.

Writing to the council or archives in Strood looks like the next step.

My class at school are going to look at the history and people who lived in this road over the years. As we look at this row of houses everyday - a very local history study!

It would be great for them to discover some of the personal stories of the residents and see how things have changed - especially the numbers living in these homes!

Any help is gratefully received

and after 1891 too.! :)

There are no plaques on walls - just wanted to know more about this road. Why is it a dead end - like the parrallel road to it?

Does anyone know when GREENFIELD ROAD was built in Gillingham. By who?

What was on the land before this? And what was on the land opposite before the school was built? Why is it only even numbered? Cost of houses when new? And any other info would be gratefully received.

Thank you

Thank you for the confirmation of marriage date.
Do you know if it was in "normal" church or with the Bible Christians?
Are there any details of their parents?
