The Common Room / Re: Marrying into the Catholic Faith

Sacred Heart Church now demolished was built for the people who lived in the Greenbank area where a large proportion of the population was of Irish descent.    Holy Cross Church also catered for the Irish residents in the Fingerpost and Parr area.

St Helens is  50/50 RC & CE.

You had to undertake instructions if you were going to change your religion to RC. you would also have to promise that all children would be brought up in the RC faith.

If they didn't wish to change religion they would be married either in the vestry  or a side altar and not in the main part of the church or main altar, and still have to promise to bring any children from the marriage up as RC

They would have to have documentary evidence to marry outside of their parish because of the risk that they had been married previously.

The Lighter Side / Re: Family history what to do to pass it on

The best places to send your genealogy information is the the Records Office nearest to you.

A lot of people in one society are finding out that work that was donated is being disposed of ie put up for sale.

At least in the Records Office the work would be held for the use of others.

I do know that I offered my library of valuable history books including some first editions to a Society I belonged to and was told they didn't want them but were interested in any information I had on cd's etc., I presume these would be scanned and put online.

These cards were sent by many 1000's of the armed forces in WW1 to loved ones and sweethearts at home.

There were many produced but a lot have been lost  I have the ones sent by my great uncles in France to my Grandmother.

They also made bbokmarks.   These items were made by groups of women initially by hand and then by machines. they were done on silk mesh in groups of about 12 on the one piece of silk and then cut up and inserted into the cards etc.,

They were first made for the 1890 Paris Exhibition and grew in favour, but after the 1920's  were not made.

I treasure mine as I am sure you will too.

Does anyone know how I do this?

I understand there is a Society but am reluctant to sign up for that.
