Scotland / Re: Crew of ship wreck buried in Durness Churchyard

Thanks for the responses.  I am wondering how, or even if it was necessary then, his widow proved he was dead in order to remarry.

Scotland / Crew of ship wreck buried in Durness Churchyard
« on: Tuesday 27 July 21 14:58 BST (UK)  »
I am researching John Peter Tonge the captain of The Canton which sank off Durness on 2nd September 1847 with all hands.  He was buried, with the rest of those who perished, in Durness churchyard.  He was from Hull, but I cannot find any death or burial records for him or his brother Thomas, who was also on board.  The deaths do not appear on any civil registration (from England or Scotland) indexes that I can find.  Any ideas where to look?

Thanks for the useful links and information

I have a 1683 inventory transcription that says "Girdell & Brandreth and such like Implement things"  - I think Brandreth is a wooden support for a Hayrick.  I have seen Girdell mentioned before but cannot see a definition unless it is a tool for girdling trees.

Occupation Interests / Boatmen/Watermen - what is a "Gold Duster"
« on: Friday 11 September 20 16:56 BST (UK)  »
I have found a report on a relative who drowned at Hull in 1850 he was a boatman but described as a "gold-duster".  I have done the normal Google thing but cannot find any references.  Any ideas?

Lincolnshire / Re: Lincolnshire 1806 Baptism Record - Any idea what this means?
« on: Thursday 10 September 20 11:58 BST (UK)  »
Thanks for the thoughts everyone.   Luke was a Waterman - does anyone think that it could be because they may be living on his boat?  Or moved in with parents outside of the Parish? The two earlier children died within a few months of being Baptised but their entries do not have the same annotation. Son John was born in 1807 no annotation either. (again, unfortunately, died within a few months) So whatever happened it was just around the birth of Luke.

Lincolnshire / Lincolnshire 1806 Baptism Record - Any idea what this means?

Winteringham, Lincolnshire Baptism records 1805, Lincolnshire Archives; Imaged at FindmyPast (https://search.findmypast.com/search-world-Records/lincolnshire-baptisms) ; Luke Dixon Baptized 09 Feb 1805.  It looks like they have written "Parents rem@" after the entry. Anyone any idea what this means?

Thanks Mckha489 - Hi Jack, I was beaten to the punch, but the link I used is https://hec.lrfoundation.org.uk/archive-library/lloyds-register-of-ships-online - it automatically links the register to google books where you can do a text search on the Register.  I also stumbled across the muster roles of Hull ships that had been partially indexed by Hull History Centre that I was not aware of before - http://www.hullhistorycentre.org.uk./research/research-guides/muster-rolls.aspx

Thanks jcmac - yep I get the abbreviations at the beginning that tell me it is a single deck brig that has had some repairs but I am trying to figure the number columns "114" - "12" - "11". I think it was built in 1829 and it had a classification of E1 (second class ship of the first quality).  It is the numbers that have me a little confused.  I am trying to get a feel for how big the ship was so I can research a picture to use in my family history.
