I'll try and clear up a few points in one go:
ScouseBoy - yes it does look like a RN ship and indeed there are women present but almost out of view (along with non ship builders). RN personnel present see image below.
aghadowey - yes, 95% sure it's the UK
mazi - ship IS flying the White Ensign plus the Union Flag and one other
josey - the word(s) you question (PORT CLEAT) I believe is a ship building term
Hazelbea - the background is a perfect match. and I'd say your date is just right so at the moment it looks like the launch of HMS WARSPITE having said that the image submitted by
Kay99 does differ very slightly....has the vessel turned to show the other end? But then I'm no (nautical) expert.

Thanks to everyone for their kind help and interest

SHIP launching  UK LOCATION help, please

Hello!

Any ideas please as to the  location of this

SHIP LAUNCHING and name of ship ?

Apart from the ship builders' technical wording nothing else to read. Huge crowd watching the launch. American flag is draped at the right. Hillside in the distance.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Blackburn Rovers 1st FOOTBALL TEAM
« on: Saturday 08 October 16 16:27 BST (UK)  »
Google is a great tool to use  ;)
It's Blackburn Rovers

Thank you JenB: great result. I've had this image quite sometime and did try an internet search years ago. Perhaps when I wasn't quite so au fait with the "magic box". It's been sitting in my "To do" pile since, along with the other images I've been putting on recently. Perhaps I should double check a few before submitting then I won't be offside...

Hello!

Any ideas please as to the identity / location of this

Rovers 1st FOOTBALL TEAM ?

Players in bi-coloured strip. Team names:-
Simpson, Latheron, Chapman, Aitkenhead, Anthony / Walmsley, Smith, Bradshaw, R.Middleton, Sec. / Crompton, Captain, Cowell / Robinson

Message on reverse starts:
"This is the Photo of the Rovers 1st"

I've found the unusual surname LATHERON is most prolific in 1911 in: Cheshire, Durham, Lancashire, & Yorkshire

There is some kind of shield/badge above Aitkenhead's left shoulder.

There was a James Bell who was a grocer in Crawfordjohn around that time

Ding Dong ShaunJ ! You had your eyes peeled for Mr Bell. I dropped a clanger thinking it was HOLM so well done and thank you very much. Thanks also to osprey for the image link: spot on.

Could this be, then, "*OLM"?

Yes indeed, I can see what you mean. The village could be something "C- HOLM" but what is the first letter I wonder?
Could the village be in Scotland?
Thanks GMCT_archivist

Hello!

Any ideas please as to the location of this

Country street with James BELL General Merchant shop

The girl at left stands in the doorway of James BELL, General Merchant, Licensed Retailer of Tobacco. Last three properties also have signs above their doors but totally unreadable due to angle .

The photo is a postcard. The stamp has been removed so nothing remains but the postmark looks like that of a small village. On the message side, opposite the date (28/6/11) is possibly the location but I am unable to decipher1 Could it be "C- John"?
