Wales / Re: Johns family..Wales & Bristol connection
« on: Monday 20 June 22 07:23 BST (UK)  »
I have Johns ancestors in Bristol, descended from James Johns 1789-1844, father William,  but can’t see an immediate link with the one mentioned here. His first wife was Sarah Pearce. That particular person worked at Finzel’s sugar refinery, but later descendants mainly shoemakers.

I hope your photo has found its way on to local history/genealogy groups by now. I’m aware that Pucklechurch still had a beagle back in 1970s (might be under Abson) I think. Interested in your UptonCheyney connections as belong to Bitton History Group.

I have come across the surname Quarman in various articles/posts on a Facebook group I run called Hanham, Longwell Green, Oldland Memories, including in connection with a business that made household cleaning/disinfectant products called Eezall in Willsbridge.  Some of these have come from archives and newspapers etc.

For anyone interested in Bitton/Oldland family and local history, there is a Bitton History Group website. The village is about 6 miles from both Bristol and Bath, in South Gloucestershire. There is also a Facebook group called Hanham, Longwell Green, Oldland and Bitton memories which includes old photos of the area, reference to items found in newspapers and archives, more about Ellacombe and the vicarage, and also felt hat making in the area. Kingswood Heritage Museum is another source, as are Gloucester and Bristol Archives, and occasionally records in Somerset Archives as area came under Keynsham Union workhouse at one stage.

Jarrett is a surname I associate with local nursery/garden centre in Oldland/Bitton and also an abattoir in Oldland. Parish boundaries got reassigned in 1889 I think….mentioned in local press.

Gloucestershire / Re: Lear, Leare, Leer, Leere 1600's & 1700's.

I need to untangle my possible ancestors pre 1800 but Sweet and Lear are definitely surnames found in Bitton parish (Oldland was part of this parish originally) . Bitton is in South Gloucestershire about 6 miles from both  Bath and Bristol. Can assist with information about this area. Several of the other surnames, Bateman, Jefferies, Wilmott crop up locally too. JMJ9

Bitton parish covered a large area, including some of Kingswood originally. Hanham was the other main parish. Records under Bitton until  Oldland St. Anne’s and Kingswood Holy Trinity conducted baptisms. I run a Facebook group for this area covering old photos, history and genealogy etc. jmj9

Gloucestershire / Re: Oldland Common ( California House )

Dear Double Trouble
I run a Facebook group called Hanham, Longwell Green, Oldland and Bitton memories. There is currently a discussion on there about the location of the Collier’s Arms , so these posts are very helpful. We would love you to join the group if you have photos of the area you are willing to share, and we will possibly have references to surnames in your tree if they lived locally.  I expect one of our members would photograph the area you refer to if asked. Also the chicken tumps/dumps mentioned earlier was an area of ground on California Road, opposite the junction of Orchard Boulevard, to left of lane that cuts through to St.Anne’s  by old water works building. In 1940s, 50s, 60s chickens were kept on the old slag heaps from California Colliery. Jmj9
