Donegal / Re: O’Donnell family emigrating to the US

Greetings
Johnson Spence O'Donnell immigrated to Jersey City New Jersey. He Married a Jane Fletcher they had Hamilton Lewis who had two wives and his daughter Elizabeth married William T. Redmond my husband's grandfather. Of interest his mother Sarah Gauntly Hamilton is descended from a long lines of Irish Lords, one of whom married the daughter, Mary, of King James II Stuart of Scotland. Due to the famous or infamous status of these generations there is huge amounts of written material which is easily accessed on Ancestry.

Here is a reply I received from a duplex tree owner on ancesstry:

Subject: Sarah Duplex Dupleix

Hi My information as sketchy as it is comes from handwritten notes by Sarah Deborah Dupleix's daughter Charlotte Deborah Finney.
As written:

1st son-John Dupleix Jun born Sept 16 1813 died Oct 1813 buried in St Marys Parish Church Athlone
2nd son-Henry Drummond born Nov 25 1814 Athlone
3rd son-William born 25 Jan 1817 Athlone
1st daughter Elizabeth born Mar 31 1819 Athlone
4th son Richard born oct 4 1821 Athlone
? Anne Dupleix born Mar 14 1824 Ballylamon Kings Co.
Daughter Kathrin Dupleix born Aug 31 1826
5th son Robert Dupleix born Ap 19 1831 in Ballylamon (married Ann Seale - issue Sarah, John, Alicia)
Re-married - issue Richard, William, Charlotte, Harriet, Emily, Robert

So while it is not a definite birthplace it is a starting point as it took me a long time to be convinced of Ann & Sarah being one and the same person. I recently found in the 1901 census Canada stating Sarah Wilkes birthday as March 14 1826 & that was close enough for me to be almost certain that the Anne that my Great Aunt Charlotte has listed is the Sarah in so many Wilkes trees.
Hope that helps.

Lisa

Perhaps it would be easier to find her father John b. 1778 or brother Richard b. 1821 both in Athlone, Westmeath.  Richard was a carpenter.  Perhaps in Scots-Presbyterian records, a marriage or baptism.

It is always invigorating to correspond with a dedicated genealogist.  I have been active with multiple family trees since 2000 when I retired as a nurse-mental health counselor. My maternal grandfather was my muse; an inveterate letter writer who traveled to find records. Besides my Caldwells we are also descended from O'Donnells in Killybegg. Also Irish was my paternal grandmother whom I only saw twice in my life.  She was an Irene Elizabeth Martin, was estranged from my father. All I know was that she was born to a James Patrick Martin and a Mary Maloney in Bridgeport CT.  They family worked for the Warner Bra & Girdle Factory.  These common Irish names have left me no hook to use in a Irish search.

Reportedly Sarah was born, 1826 in Ballyamon, Kings (or Affley) Co., to JOHN DUPLEX [Dupleix], b. 1778 in Althlone, Westmeath, and a Deborah Martin. Sarah ,unmarried, arrived in New York City 5 May 1848 with her brother Robert who apparently planned to marry a U.S. citizen, Malvina Unknown and move to Toronto.  She then was recorded in Montreal in May of 1849 where she married a John Wilkes of "The Queens Light Dragoons." They were married in the "Wee Kirk" (Erskine Presbyterian)[Drouin Collection on Ancestry] formed by Secessionists from the Church of Scotland. I wondered why Montreal, but that church history shows institution of a Duplex Weekly Offering Envelope in 1908 which leads me to guess she may well of had family in Montreal.

Some time between 1861 & 1871 they moved to Toronto.  They had six children; Sarah was widowed at age 46 but lived to age 92 in Toronto.

My husband is descended from their daughter Sarah Jane who married a John Titus Caldwell in Toronto in 1874 at Knox Presbyterian Church. Our Caldwell's were brought to Toronto as skilled Wallpaper craftsmen by the Moses Staunton Co. of Belfast, and our line followed that trade into Buffalo, NY, New Brunswick, NJ and York, PA. It was only that marriage record held by our family and vague references to them being Scots Presbyterians from near Glasgow that lead me over numerous years to tracing the family.

I came up with this town of birth from two family trees on ancestry. They listed Kings Co. (which is also known as Offaly). Neither tree had primary records with that information.  I have posted a query re same on both trees.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply

There are two documents written at Sarah Gantley A. O'Donnell's death; both refer to her as daughter of James Hamilton ESQ, of Fintra [Fintra House was James' Estate House in Killybeg(g)Donegal], dying at the home of her son Hamilton Lewis O'Donnell, Gortmore, Feb. 17 1857. The gatehouse for that estate still stands and, I believe, is a B&B. There are pics on the net.  If you go on Ancestry and search him, I have a private tree tracing my husband's line of Hamilton's family to Jersey City, N.J.  Search under family trees; mine is a Redmond Family Tree and my user name is JerseyFox. Ask for contact mentioning Rootchat in the message and I will give you access to the tree which has quite a bit more info
Warm Regards

This Wildgoose family branch came to New Brunswick, N.J. c. 1880. This family with 12 children came and multiplied.  I have a huge tree on Ancestry, but am looking for living descendants.
