Occupation Interests / Re: Do you have corkcutter ancestors?

Wow glad I found this I thought 'Cork Cutter' was a slightly sarcastic way of saying 'does nothing / gentleman'

Just been researching a Salisbury family in one Census (1891) George Salisbury was a Cork Cutter on other dcumentation / Census records he was a Barman, Licensed Victualler, most often down as a Gentleman.

btw this was in Walton on the Hill, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.

Hi

Does anyone have access to the records for Christ Church, Blackburn, Lancashire?

A lot of marriage on one side of the family appear to take place there.

The one I am stuck on at the moment is Eric Carter / Jane Harwood which took place in 1937.

I think Eric's Parents were James Carter and Mary Coupland their marriage took place in 1904 also at Christ Church, Blackburn.

I need this to verify the relationship. This is not my direct line but a Great Aunt / Great Uncle.

Heres Hoping with Thanks Jinks

The Common Room / Re: Is there a Logical Answer?

Might seem a bit old fashioned nowadays but often when a Man married a Woman who already had children, the children took on the step Father's name - like an informal adoption, some Children later reverted to their Birth Name others didn't, but on documents he probably had to use his Birth Name but in normal day to day life might never have used his true Birth Name, always his 'adopted' Fathers Name.

It's a long shot but have you checked the National Portrait Gallery collection on Ancestry?

They weren't that notable, probably painted by their next door neighbour, just checked and nearly dropped by laptop when the name came up but NO not mine.

Difficult one - could I have parted with My Grandmother's homemade quilt - NO, but the objects i have from My Grandmother are 'sentimental' to me - A brass boar ashtray that I remember seeing in her house and painting my Dad did of My Grandparent's Farm when they retired from Farming. I did manage to offload two oil paintings to my Auntie  they had no sentimental value to me in fact I don't even remember them on the wall! There's thing that I wish I had (and seen) but obviously things are shared with different descendants - The oil Paintings of My Great-Great Grandparents and the commemorative flagon that belonged to another Great-Great-Great Grandparent when they had a public house. I hope they are still in the family somewhere both people that had these items have now passed.

I was looking for a George Quelch - using the possibility of George being the Quelch rather than Lillie and familysearch kept throwing up a George Henry Quelch born circa 1877 - He is residing in Ryde, Isle of wright with wife last child listed born 1911, so I sort of discounted him, but checked the voting registrations in London (which also came up in the search) not sure if it's the same person. Just the the George (In London) seemed a possibility due to her owning her own home etc on a waitress wage.
