Thank you all for your pointers, I can see a trip to Sunderland maybe needed later in the year.
Thanks Annie, I had been told Jarrow some years back by a cousin and just noted the name, could be Mere Knolls or Monkwearmouth cemetery are closer, having seen the list of cemeteries in the area from Stan (thanks) , there are quite a few
Michael Mahon was my Great Grandfather; he was born 1828 in Ballymacooligan, Kings Co. Ireland. He came over here and joined the Royal Marines Light Infantry in 1848, (Crimean Veteran);
1869 Discharged RM Chatham; joined 7th Battalion Rifle Brigade,
1871 he is Colour Sergeant 1st Kings Tower Hamlets Militia
1881 Staff Sergeant, Greenwich Pensioner Militia
1891 Post Office Overseer, Telegraph Messengers, retiring in 1899 at the age of 71; in all spent 50 years in service to the crown.
At the time of his death he was living with his daughter and son in law. (William H Crump)
I know there was a press cutting since I have a scanned copy, but it is badly damaged, headed “Crimean Veteran” has a photo of Michael with his medals (Photo: By A W Wilson & Co) but much of the text is missing and not a clue which newspaper it is taken from.
Thanks again
