Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Help - William NEILD/NIELD

Hi Steve,

No my Grandad wasn't born until 1924 however his dad & his grandad were Joseph which is a strange coincidence but they died 1951 and 1936 from what I have researched.

Many thanks for your suggestion though.

Best wishes,
Tracy

Yes Hugh, he volunteered the day after his 18th birthday & his papers say for hostilities only so is the 'X' nothing to do with what Joboy said?

Hi Joboy,

His Register number on his papers starts PLY/X, would that indicate what you have said do you know?

Hi Hugh, that's really helpful information thank you. I'm going to the Royal Marines Museum next week so will ask how to get a copy of his pay ledger while I'm there.

Thanks again,

Hi Seaweed, the only thing he ever told me of the war was that he "used to shoot the big gun on the ship" & I have a photo of him with his regiment that says "6" Gun Battery" on the back. I was wondering if he protected the bases from a ship but then how did he get the Africa and Italy stars?  ???

That seems to all relate to the merchant navy, my grandad was a Royal Marine. I've checked through the thread and can't see anything else.

No, just the four but I don't see how he could've been a gunner on a ship if he was only ever on land.

Hi, thanks I've just read that but the names on the papers are bases not ships. Portsmouth Division, HMS Proserpine, HMS Dinosaur, 34 Italian Labour Battalion & Plymouth Division. I was once told they can get a medal even if they weren't actually fighting against/near the actual country.

Very confused
