Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Was Emily Symmonds born in Newent?
« on: Saturday 05 July 14 23:58 BST (UK)  »
Hello Muffin41

Emily Symonds (aka Emma) born Newent 1831 daughter of Thomas Symonds and Anne Coldrick, married James Baylis 27th August 1850 at St. James  Gloucester.  James Baylis' occupation was a Waterman as was his wife Emily's half brothers, William and James Coldrick.

According to the 1871 census your Emily Symmonds was born 1834 in Donnington, Gloucestershire, ref piece 2492, folio 83, page 26.

Obtaining the marriage certificate of Thomas Pow and Emily should give her father's name.

Hope this helps in your quest for Emily and her family.

Hi Gaynor

A very good site for parish register transcripts is The Forest of Dean Family History Trust http://www.forest-of-dean.org.uk/ free to use once you've registered.  There are a number of Mitchell burials in Minsterworth, however not all graves have headstones. There's a Charles Mitchell buried in Minsterworth 1880, also a Charles Mitchell buried 1887 Westbury on Severn. Ann buried 1857, Thomas buried 1912 both Minsterworth.

Gloucestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Burial Records

Hello

According to the survey of Hatherop Memorial Inscriptions carried out by Ralph Bigland in the 1780s "The Register commences in 1657 and it is said that the preceding Notices were destroyed.".  The earliest year date I could find recorded on a headstone was 1657.

The Common Room / Illegitimacy, father's name on birth certificate

In the 1930s if the father's name is given on the birth certificate of an illegitimate child, would he have had to be present at the registration or given his written consent?

Warwickshire / Re: Where did Peter Metcalf disappear to in census records?

Morning all  :)

Have been dissecting the Ancestry trees.  Can now discount Peter Franklin Metcalf as the person I'm looking for.  He was born Dec qtr. 1837 Spalding and is with his family in Donington in 1851 aged 13.  My Peter Metcalf was in Evesham in 1851.

A couple of the trees have included the baptism of my Peter, 1831 Leamington, as being Peter Franklin born 1837.      Not unusual with Ancestry's hints and tips  ::)

Mo thank you for finding Jane in 1861, had looked at all combinations for surname, didn't consider Melalf  ::)

The Peter Metcalf with family in Kansas is a possibility.  I'd looked at the Ancestry trees for Peter Franklin Metcalf previously but had discounted him because a) the place of birth given as Lincolnshire;  b) middle name of Franklin [he was baptised as Peter Metcalf 4th Dec 1831 Leamington] and c) the year he emigrated, 1856 on one census.

His first three children with Jane Lewis were born 1857, 1858 and 1859.  Emily's father we know,  from her birth certificate 1870, was Samuel Derry.  Perhaps Jane was telling porkies when she named Peter Metcalf as the father of Edwin (1872)  :o

Warwickshire / Where did Peter Metcalf disappear to in census records?
« on: Thursday 07 February 13 11:53 GMT (UK)  »
Where did Peter Metcalf disappear to?  The only census I’ve found him is 1851.
Apprentice to Coach Maker, Evesham (HO107 piece 2044 folio 79 page 36).

He was born 1831 Leamington Priors. He married Jane Lewis (b. 1833 Wootton Wawen) 23rd December 1855 St. Martins Birmingham.
They had five children
1)   Lizzie 1857 Oakham, Staffs.
2)   William Frederick 1858 Oakham.
3)   Walter 1859 Henley in Arden, d. 1920 Leek, Staffs.
4)   Emily 15th January 1870, Carlisle St., Birmingham. Birth certificate states her father as   Samuel Derry, mother Jane Metcalf.  The birth is registered under Derry and Metcalf.
5)   Edwin 10th Feb 1872, back of 22 Kent St. Birmingham.  Birth certificate shows father as Peter Metcalf, occupation Black Smith, mother Jane Metcalf formerly Lewis).

1861 children were staying with relatives.
Lizzey was in Alcester with her uncle and aunt George and Ann Lewis.
Frederick was with his grandmother Mary Lewis in Wootton Wawen.
Walter was a Nurse Child in the house of Matilda Lowe (36) Widow, Henley in Arden.

Where were Peter and Jane in 1861?  Perhaps Jane was ill after the birth of Walter?
1871 Jane, Lizzie, Walter and Emily were living in Birmingham. Jane's occupation, Book sewer and folder.  She’s noted as married where was Peter? RG10 piece 3130 folio 85 page 8.

Haven’t found a death for Peter Metcalf, however in 1876 Jane Metcalf married Charles Coleman in West Brom.

1881 Jane’s  occupation Stationery folder similar/same as in 1871.  The family were living 7, Trentham Place, Cattell Road, Aston.  Emily and Edwin are noted as daughter and son of Charles Coleman (RG11 piece 3023 folio 99 page 5).
Emily married under the name Metcalf and in later census Edwin’s surname is Metcalf.

By 1891 Jane was a widow, occupation Stationery Folder. There’s a death registration for a Jane Coleman, 1897 Kings Norton. Another possibility Jane Metcalf 1898 Birmingham.

Any help in solving the disappearence of Peter Metcalf much appreciated
