Australia / Re: MARKWELL brother James and Samuel convicts Stuston Suffolk
« on: Monday 06 February 23 04:22 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for those 2. They're great. Now we just need a connection that shows that that James is the convict from the Lady Harewood. (plus that the Samuel of the death in Port Stephens is the convict from the Strathfieldsaye, & Samuel's b/ bp & m & mysterious wife) (& John & Harriet's emigration). That would be lovely!

Sorry for not referring back to my first post about John.
Thanks for the extra information about the returning of the deposit. I wonder how long they had been in the colony. The Trove article that said that John and Harriet were childless and came out in 1856 was from the Windsor and Richmond Gazette 21 Sep 1901 after they passed away. It was http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/85856065?searchTerm=markwell&searchLimits=l-decade=190|||l-year=1901|||l-title=192#pstart8927010
Thanks again.
Does anyone know about any of my James and/ or Samuel questions?
Are you saying, Dundee, that the James in the Wilberforce Cemetery is both the father of John and the convict from the Lady Harewood? That would be good, because I would have the right James!

3 little extras:
I have seen their father called Robert MARKALL instead of John MARKWELL.
Trove says John and Harriet had no children, and emigrated in 1856. I think they could have been sponsored by James, but I cannot find the ship.
I believe Samuel was married when transported, but I do not know who to.
Thanks.

Australia / MARKWELL brother James and Samuel convicts Stuston Suffolk
« on: Sunday 05 February 23 22:01 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find out about many holes in my research about James and Samuel MARKWELL (variations can include e.g. MARKALL, MACKWELL, MAXWELL), convicts to New South Wales, Australia, James 1832 on the Lady Harewood and Samuel arriving 1836 on the Strathfieldsaye.
James was b 1792 but bp 1794 in Stuston Suffolk England, with parents John MARKWELL and Elizabeth WEAVERS. He seems to have m Mary BRONWIN 1814, then been transported. He received a Ticket of Leave in 1840 and a Certificate of Freedom in 1846. From wonderful Trove, he was a fishmonger (or carpenter) assigned to Thomas MALONEY of Wilberforce in 1832. Could it be him buried in Wilberforce Cemetery in 1870, with his son John (possibly John Reeve Markwell?) and John's wife Harriet (possibly ShREEVE)?
Samuel is harder to get any facts about, besides being b possibly 1808 (or 1803?), probably in the same place, and being a carpenter who received a Certificate of Freedom in 1842 or 3. Could it be him who died in Port Stephens in 1873, 70y?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. I'll just have to try multiple counties, or just leave counties out in searches.

Thanks. I'll explore it further. I thought there might have been some special reason why both Co. Waterford & Co. Tipperary would have the records from that diocese.

Thanks again. It is becoming clearer. Basically they are Tipperary, but also copied in Waterford?
one more question as I don't live in Ireland:
What's special about the Diocese of Waterford & Lismore please?

Thank you for replying
Sorry for that mistake. Yes I did mean ifhf not nli. I thought I'd checked it but obviously not well enough. I think I've now fixed it.
I will investigate more about the online sources. I see what you mean about the T & the W but I don't really understand what you mean about Waterford having some Tipperary records.
I still don't understand why ifhf would have 2 records of the same events, one Co. Tipperary & one Co. Waterford. The marriage one at the nli is https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632128#page/46/mode/1up
I've transcribed it as Filters: Marriages 1841 February: image: e.g.
2nd page/ 2
Matrimonie? 1841 Febum? 23rd ...
Matrimonium Mauritius Tobin & Margarita Coughlin de Dangan? Patritius Hyland? & Catharina Greehy? ….? ….? Signature?
Thanks so much for your help.

Ireland / Tipperary? or Waterford?
« on: Saturday 26 November 22 22:19 GMT (UK)  »
I'm just wondering why I have found double entries for several baptisms and a marriage in Clogheen/ Ballyporeen/ Ballysheehan/ Shanrahan & in Templetenny/ Ballyporeen in Roman Catholic Diocese Waterford & Lismore in ifhf. They are recorded both as Co. Tipperary and as Co. Waterford. The baptisms are all recorded as Co. Tipperary both in nli registers and in FindMyPast. They are given as Parish Clogheen The marriage is recorded in FindMyPast as Co. Tipperary but in the ifhf as both Co. Tipperary & Co. Waterford. It is in Templetenny/ Ballyporeen.
I would greatly appreciate any information. I have drawn a blank on the net.
Thanks.
