Hi Alistair

Just looking through my handwritten copies of the Marriage records for St Catherine's Church, Eskdale and I found their marriage:

On 26th February 1759 William Craghill of Eskdale married a Dorothy Tyson of Ulpha by licence

So I think you will need to look for the Ulpha records, which is a nearby hamlet.  I have no record of  Dorothy or Roger Tyson being baptised in Eskdale.  Sorry I can't be more help

Hi Diddy

Yes it does look very promising, I've just looked on the map and Clenchwarton is right next to West Lynn.  thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

Norfolk / JOSEPH BENSTEAD married in Clenchwarton in 1786 but where was he born???
« on: Wednesday 10 November 10 21:06 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

I am researching the JOSEPH BENSTEAD (born approximately 1765) who married SUSANNAH BELSDON (born approximately 1760) in Clenchwarton, Norfolk on 19th October 1786.  They had 10 children all baptised in Clenchwarton, Norfolk :

1787 Eleanor
1789 Lydia
1791 Margaret
1793 Joseph
1795 William
1797 James (died in 1797)
1798 Benjamin (died in 1799)
1800 Benjamin
1802 Amy (died in 1804)
1804 Henry

I recently made a trip to the Wisbech & Fenlands Museum to view the Clenchwarton Records, however I have hit a brick wall as neither Joseph or Susannah were born in Clenchwarton.  I am now trying to trace where they were born.  If anyone could help me or point me in the right direction I would be most grateful.

Many Thanks :)

Hi,

A possible death if she didn't marry,

Emily BENSTEAD    Dec Q 1945    Surrey Mid Eastern    2a  274
Age:  48

Regards,
Daisy

I have just received a copy of the Death Certificate for Emily Benstead and I am pretty sure it's our Emily.

The certificate shows she died at The Cane Hill Mental Hospital at Coulsdon, Surrey.  She was a Spinster age 48 - other particulars unknown.  It mentions also under occupation that she was of 8 ? Block Peabody Buildings, Camberwell Green S.E.5.  No mention of any relatives on the Certificate, but it all seems to point to her being our Emily.

I believe that people who died at Cane Hill Hospital were buried in the grounds.  In the early 1980's 5000 bodies were removed from the Hospital Grounds and cremated then scattered at Croydon Cemetery.

Seems like quite a sad story  :(

I would just like to thank Daisypetal for finding the record for me and helping me find out what happened to Emily

Hello again Brian...

Sorry It doesnt mention if John was a widower, I think if it did I would have probably noted it down.  I dont know a lot about the Ulverston area, I concentrated on Eskdale and Wasdale where my lot were from.

Let me know if I can be of anymore help to you.  Good Luck

Hi Brian

I am assuming that The Mill is Eskdale Mill which is the in the hamlet of Boot,

http://www.eskdalemill.co.uk/

Wha House is further up the valley towards Hardknott Pass.

I cant see a marriage at St Catherine's Church for John & Ann, neither can I see a death for Ann - do you know when she died?

There is a baptism of a John Tyson on 5th October 1801 he was a son of John & Jane Tyson of Mill House, who may have then moved to "Thorns" in Boot (which is not far away at all from the Mill) to have further children who were baptised at St Catherine's:

9th April 1903 - William
9th July 1906 - Matthew
9th October 1808 - Sarah

There is a record of a marriage at St Catherines Church on 4th January 1801 for a John Tyson & Jane Long - both of Eskdale.

There is a record of a marriage on 25th November 1820 of John Tyson, Yeoman of Thorns and Mary Jackson of this parish.

Who had the following children baptised whilst living at Thorns:

12 Jan 1821 - Mary
17 Jan 1823 - Sarah
9 Apr 1825 - Hannah
2 Dec 1827 - Jane
19 Apr 1830 - John
25 Nov 1832 - Edward
10 May 1835 - Jonathon
15 Oct 1837 Joseph

There is also a mention of Aaron & Hannah Tyson of The Mill, who was a Miller.  I cant find a record of their marriage at St Catherines but they had two children baptised there :

5 Apr 1821 - John
11 Aug 1822 - Hannah

There as so many Tysons in Eskdale at this time and a lot of John Tysons so it is very confusing.  In my family Tree I have a Dinah Tyson from Eskdale marrying a John Tyson from Nether Wasdale so it is very confusing indeed. I cant see a link between my tree and yours but you never know we might be related somewhere along the line!  Whereabouts are you from?

If I can be of any further help please let me know, I have handwritten copies of all Baptisms, Burials and Marriages going back as far as 1630 for Tysons at St Catherines Church Eskdale.

LindyLoo :)
