England / Re: William and James Portland
« on: Sunday 26 September 10 16:00 BST (UK)  »
Sorry..England is where they came the story goes..they changed their name to Williams upon arriving to Newfoundland..when? James oldest child was born in 1850 in NL..William's oldest child was born 1862 (NL) has been established that Williams was not their surname..don't know why they changed their Dad and other Williams' think it is Portland or Porter...on the birth record of 2 of William's children, the words "alias Portland" is written..I found a William Portland listed in Lovell's Directory for Newfoundland 1871 for Cape Norman...James had died by then..I have been looking myself via online census, birth records, etc., from England but have had no luck...According to Williams' oral tradition, they arrived together, before 1850 (this based on the dates of their children)..their birth dates based on their gravestone information is:  William Portland abt. 1812, James Portland abt. 1805.   Hopefully, you can help..I have also tried to locate them as Williams' brothers but no luck....Yvonne

The Common Room / Parrill, Pearl or Pearle or Parreil

I am looking for Scottish ancestors by the last name Parrill, Pearl or Pearle or Parreil. I am not having any luck finding any variations of the name.  I have no date or what part of Scotland he came from.  The first name is Richard and he came to Newfoundland.  I don't know when.  The last name is written Parrill today but older folks pronounce it Pearl and I have seen it written on documents as Pearl, Pearle, Parreil, and Perrin.  Any ideas.

Thank you, Jusnoneed.  I will keep looking in the Isle of Portland and area.  Another question for all..In the 1800's did people usually baptize their children soon after birth or was the child sometimes 2 or 3 years old?

Thanks for the response.  I tried Portland, Dorset but can't find any Williams' there.  I am wondering if there is another Portland somewhere in England.

Somerset / William and James WILLIAMS

Hello all;

I am looking for information on William Williams born 1812 and his brother James born 1805.  They were living in Newfoundland by 1850.  I have no idea where they came from.  William's nickname was "Old Portland" because that is where he came from supposedly.  I can't find any record of Williams' from the Isle of Portland.  I found Portland mention on some site as being a place in Somerset in the area of Gloucester and Street but I can't find it on a map.  Is there a Portland in the county of Somerset?
