World War Two / ATS decoding Service record
« on: Sunday 17 April 16 19:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I'm working my way through an Army Service record for the Auxiliary Territorial Service.  I'm hoping that someone can decode some hand writing for me.

On the Notification of Impending release (Part 2) on the coy. and group/Unit there is    'L' Coy S.AS/DG.  Nancy was based in the Aldershot and Farnborough areas throughout the war as a cook and orderly.

Could someone please help as I seem to be stuck with the Small Arms Service/Dragoon Guard according to some of the abbreviations help pages.

Many Thanks
Matt

Kent Lookup Requests / Re: Emily Smith. Snodland
« on: Tuesday 23 October 07 20:00 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
The only other bits of information to hand is that she married Alfred Johnson.

She also died in 1956

Unfortunately this branch is at the early stages, so I'm just chancing my arm before I have to put in some leg work.

Thanks again
Matt

Kent Lookup Requests / Emily Smith. Snodland

Hello,
Just starting on the wifes side of the family with this query. ;D

Any information please on Emily Jane Smith.  Born 1890 (ish) in the Snodland area.  Snodland is an educated guess and therefore could be wrong.

If someone could please give me a head start, I would be grateful

Many Thanks
Matt

My impression of this series has been about people with a specific idea of ' who they are', and it's been disproved ie John Hurt thinking he was Irish.

So how about taking an Australian who thinks they are descended from convicts and see if that could be disproved.  Barry Humphries, Kylie or Rolf

Anyway, back to my list:-

Derek Griffiths
Chris Tarrant
Alexander Armstrong (Pimms o'clock)
A generic celebrity chef
Sean Bean

The Common Room / Finding living relatives
« on: Friday 12 October 07 21:49 BST (UK)  »
Wonder if some people can help shed some light.

The deceased : George Edward Starley b24.April 1911

We believe his mother to be Ann Starley b1886

My dad and 2 of his cousins have received a letter from a company in Bridgewater, England claiming to have the estate of the above mentioned George.  The 3 cousins are related to George as 1st cousins once removed.

My question is :- How did this company find them ?  No one has Starley as a surname and without intimate knowledge of our tree, can't really see how they made the connection.  We don't think it's a scam, but just curious to know.

Many Thanks
