Family History Beginners Board / Re: aber house Nantymoel .( Llandyfodwg)
« on: Wednesday 16 December 20 18:04 GMT (UK)  »
Just noticed enquiries about Aber House at Aber Colliery near Caerphilly. The one-time manager was David Vaughan 1844-1923 [my great-uncle, known as 'Uncle Daffo']. Various records find him 'of Aber Colliery' in 1870, as 'Colliery Manager' in 1871, as Colliery Manager at Aber House in 1879; the 1881 census has him as a visitor at Llangynwyd, Bach Farm, but the next record has him at Aber House as 'Colliery Agent' in 1886, and he is enumerated in 1891 as 'Mine Colliery Agent , living at Aber House.  By 1891 he was retired, living elsewhere.
He and his wife Alice [nee Pritchard, of Wick] had no children.
I'd be glad if someone can confirm if Aber House still stands - I'm a bit far away from the Ogmore Valley now.  Merry Christmas!

The mystery word is familiar to me as some of my Vaughan family lived there in 1830s and later.
To quote from my [unpublished!] family history: "The locality of Nant-y-ceisiad ST 202 891 lies above the present east-west road, A468; it takes its name from the brook (Nant) that ran down to the Rhymney River".
ST 202 891 is the Ordnance Survey map reference.
I don't think the enumerator would have been a non-Welshspeaker - just that the name had/has a few variations possible in Monmouthshire Welsh dialect.

Monmouthshire / Re: Ann Price marr. Joseph Vaughan 1729 Rockfield

Looks like we're hanging off the same family tree - all the data you posted is familiar to me. Are you the Mr Spencer who has a tree posted on Ancestry? If so, maybe I could offer a few new leads ,and some amendments based on my sixty-one years' research [now culminating in a book 'Three Centuries of the Vaughans' in 15 chapters!]

This post from you was 4 years ago - hope you're still around!
This marriage, Rockfield 1729, is on my family tree with a few hundred other Vaughans [mostly Monmouthshire]. I'd like to know what you know, please.

Surrey / Re: Hill Family & Maurice= Shere/Gomshall

Thank you again Valda, for your efforts in sorting this one out.
The vicar of Shere was not Arthur [as you have it], but Frederick Charles Hill. Although Arthur's last residence was in the parish of Sonning, it was reported in the Reading Standard of 20.2.1909 - in a very full report - describes Arthur's funeral at Shere, with the Rev F C Hill officiating. It recounts that his wife [died 1901] was buried 'there', and in adjacent graves were their sons Arthur William Hill, died 1896, and [the Rev. Harry] Ernest Hill, died 1906.  We know that there is, in St James', a large memorial window to Mrs Hill - so where are these graves?  The R. Standard was capable of getting facts wrong, e.g. it states "St Paul's Church, Shere" which it  equates with "Gomshall" in an ambiguous way; but we know from other sources that the Rev F C Hill was vicar at St James', not "St Paul's".  Yes, I must get down to Shere and look at the graves for myself - do you know if it is open to visit at all times?

Thank you Valda. I had already tried that online resource, but failed to find 'my' Hill family at St James'.  When the funeral reports of 1901 and 1906 both said 'Gomshall Cemetery' perhaps they meant somewhere else, but that is strange because the minister conducting both funerals was the vicar of Shere, Rev. F C Hill; the 1901 funeral was his mother, the 1906 one his brother. It's also possible that there were no gravestones to record, or they were illegible, or the researcher failed to see them.  Perhaps I shall have to put some 'boots on the ground' to see for myself!
Best regards ~ Phil

Many thanks Valda for your quick response to my enquiry. I had already found these details [and more] on Arthur Hill - my aim was, as I hoped to have made clear, to find more on his descendants in the next generation or two.
My reference to 'Gomshall cemetery' was taken from the contemporary newspaper account of the funeral of Mrs Harriet Hill and, later, a brother of The Rev. Fred. - I don't know the locality.
Perhaps someone living more locally can find gravestones for the Hill family around 1900-1920 at one of St James' churchyards, or else I shall need to come and hunt myself.  Any offers please?

Surrey / Hill Family & Maurice= Shere/Gomshall

Rev F.C. HILL [1856-1919] was vicar of St James, Shere.  I have info on his life and death but wish to ascertain details of his family, especially any living.  His mother Harriet has a memorial window in the church; she was buried in Gomshall cemetery, probably adjacent to various other Hill family members.  Can anyone tell me if their tombstones still exist and I can visit to check dates etc. if necessary. I'm also interested in their relations, the MAURICE family; one Hilary Maurice was buried at Shere in 1980.  All help gratefully acknowledged.
