Thank you so much for all of this information, it is super helpful and really appreciated :)  I will take a look through everything at the weekend when I get a chance and post back.

I had a look at the Aldbourne parish register images on Ancestry and there is no mention of any Chalice/Challis family members born there anywhere near 1763 when you mention Thomas as being baptised there.

I notice that you mention that your Thomas died in Hungerford Berkshire...Have you tried searching in nearby counties such as Berkshire of which the border is a hop, skip and a jump from Aldbourne?

The reason I ask is because 17 minutes (15km) away in West Shefford, Berkshire a Frances Chalice is listed as the wife of John Chalice being buried there 27 Apr 1773. Is this perhaps where your Thomas got the name for his daughter?

Additionally, given that Lambourn, Berkshire is only 12mins (9km) away it may be a good place to also look as there appear to be many, Chalice/Challis family members baptised, married and buried there. Such as John Chalice the elder of Lambourn Woodlands buried on 15 Jan 1777.

There is also a Thomas Challice son of John and Ann baptised in Lambourn on 29 Dec 1751. Whilst older than you have stated Thomas to be (you say 1763) is it possible that Thomas married late in life (37)?

Lastly, there is a Benjamin Chalice Gentleman of Newbury, Berkshire who left a will (PCC) 5 May 1779 who mentions his children of which one being a late Richard Challis, who had the children (grandchildren of the testator): Mary, John, Thomas and Elizabeth. The will also mentions another son of Benjamin - Thomas who had the following children (grandchildren of the testator) at the time: Joseph, Thomas and Elizabeth.

My bad, I can't find any mention of where I recorded the birth :(  It was a few years back, I think I recorded it from a Wiltshire site of parish records I found.

I have:
Thomas Chalice - Born 1763, Aldbourne, Wiltshire
Married Ann Bunce 28 Jul 1788, Aldbourne, Wiltshire
Died 1799, Aldbourne, Wiltshire

Child (my great grandfather x4)
Thomas Challis - Born 1795, Aldbourne, Wiltshire
Married Sarah Lambdon 26 Sep 1819, Aldbourne, Wiltshire
Died 1850, Hungerford, Berkshire

Thank you for your reply  :)

I have a birth, marriage and death entry for Thomas all in Aldbourne, Wiltshire.  I will take a look at the other areas as you suggest and hopefully stumble across something.

How do you know for sure that is where he was born?

Is the birth (is it a baptism? Doesn’t it name at least his father?) entry online?  Can you please link? Or attach.

Have you been through the ones born in other parts of the country?

I have (thankfully confirmed by wills, marriage licenses and witnesses around the place) a woman who was born in Staffordshire in 1743, married in London in 1767.  Went home for delivery of first child (or at least went back there to have that child baptised there)
But by 1780 they are in Somerset and then to Warminster Wilts. (And still kept in touch with at least one relative in London in 1799)

So, as you cannot easily see your man in Wiltshire. I would see if you can follow those other half dozen forward to eliminate them.

Have you tried looking for a matching family tree on Ancestry? Or you may get further back on Familysearch.org
Carol

Hi Carol.  Thank you for your reply :)

Yes, I have looked for matching trees on Ancestry but no luck.  I have also searched Familysearch but can't see any baptism records for Thomas :(

Hi all :) After the release of the 1921 census, I have decided to have another crack at trying to get past my 5x great grandfather, Thomas Chalice (Challis).  Thomas was born in Aldbourne, Wiltshire in 1763.  He died in 1799, leaving behind his wife (Ann Bunce) and children Sally, William, Frances and Thomas (my 4x great grandfather).

I have no idea on how I can get to the 6x generation and where to find details on Thomas's parents.  I have searched all the Wiltshire Parish records I can find, but no luck :/  If anyone could give me some tips on what steps I could take next, I would be very grateful.  TIA, Mark :)

Thanks very much. Are you able to advise where you found this info? I have tried searching but can't see any marriage info or details of the children.

Thanks again :)

These look like the parents

Wiltshire / Help finding out info on Charles Hawkins (c. 1795 - 1873)
« on: Thursday 14 May 20 23:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone,

I am trying to get some info on my great x4 grandad, Charles Hawkins.

Charles was born approx. 1795 in Wiltshire and married Jemima Maclin or Macklen on 19 Jul 1818. I have Charles on the 41-71 census but can't find any baptism, so can see no way that I can go any further back on this line. The census records that he was born in Manningford Bohum/or Manningford Bruce. Charles died in 1873, RD Pewsey, Wiltshire.

There are lots of public trees on Ancestry showing a mother and father but none have any records or evidence that I can see to back up this info.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated as always :) thank you in advance.

Mark
