Antrim / Re: John Neeson of 4 Ballybollen Road
« on: Tuesday 05 October 21 23:17 BST (UK)  »
I live in Ahoghill so I know the area. Up until the roads were named, probably around 1975 the spelling was Aughtercloney. After that time what I knew as the Cloney Road was renamed the Clooney Road. The Ballybollan Road confused me as it was only named as such around 1975, before than we only talked about townlands, an address could have been Ballybollan, Ahoghill. I was very friendly with a man who was very much into Irish and townlands etc. He told me that when the Government was naming roads etc they went back into the Irish language but many of their spellings were wrong. I know of one road which has one spelling at one end and a different spelling at the other end.

Sorry, not near enough to take photos but you can get headstone inscriptions on http://www.thebraid.com/explore-your-roots.aspx . Just enter the surname and graveyard.

Antrim / Re: Where is the High Road from Broughshane to the Glens?

Go to Google Maps, type in Broughshane, look for Tullymore Road to the east of the village, follow that road, it changes to Glens Brae Road and will eventually bring you onto the Glenravel Road to the west side of Cargan. If you go through Cargan you will eventually come to Cushendall or Cushendun. Look at the map again in Google Earth to let you see the terrain of the area.

Go to https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk, create an account and enter the surname you are looking for. If you have a general year to work with very good, otherwise you will have to work in four year blocks. I have obtained information around 1870, also death records in the 1940s.

The address "4 Ballybollan Road" is only relevant in recent years since roads were given names. Having lived on Ballybollan Road until I was married I know the area. I would suggest there is no such address as No. 4, the first dwelling on the road in the dates mentioned would have been the first laneway on the left coming from Glebe Road.
I believe that townland would be Ballymacilroy.
Margie mentioned having contacted the parish Church, is that the Church of Ireland or the Roman Catholic Church.

Deborah,
At last I have some information for you. I spoke to his nephew Raymond, Ralphs wife was called Meg, probably Margaret, Brown, a sister of Raymonds father. After they left Grange they went to Tully which is a short distance from Ballymena on the road to Larne. After a few years they went to Canada, again returning after a short time and living in Kinhilt Street in Ballymena. After a short time they again moved to Toome Road, Ballymena. Ralph died 28th July 1979 and Meg died 29th November 1988. They are both buried in the Cushendall Road Cemetery, Ballymena. Raymond said that Ralph was not connected to either of the Duffin families I mentioned earlier. My email address is (*), if you contact me directly I will pass on these communications to Raymond. Although he is not computer literate his children are.

John

Deborah,
Sorry, I omitted to mention that he had no children. His wife's maiden name was Brown, sorry I have no more in formation at present.
John

I vaguely remember the house that Ralph Duffin lived in at the Grange being sold, about 1952, to the present owner who is now in a nursing home. My brother visited him on Friday night past and obtained the following information.
Ralph moved to the main Ballymena to Larne road where he had bought a farm. He remained there for a few years when he emigrated to America. After a few years he returned but we are not sure where to. He was married to an aunt of a gentleman I know very well, please give me time to follow up this lead. I believe he died quite suddenly when he was about eighty years old.

I suggest you look at http://www.thebraid.com/genealogy.aspx Ballymena Council Graveyard website. Just type in the surname and leave the second box at all. You can then identify the particular graveyard where your relation may be buried.
