Wow, Thanks for all your help, the George Appleyard in Conisbrough mentioned in the probate is George and Susannas son, so that all fits perfectly.  I even found his brother Joseph staying with William on a later census.  They were all in the cabinet making business.

I expect the mary sizer connection is also correct and will look into this

Thanks again

David

Hi, I've run into a wall trying to find any trace of Susanna's family in the Hull Area.
From her marriage certificate in 1837 to George Appleyard, her father was a Thomas Brumby (lawyer or sawyer by profession) and a William Brumby was a witness.   I've not found any parish records that could suggest a mothers name.

Any suggestions would be welcome

Best Regards

Hi Dave,

I'm decended from Joseph's brother George, but rather than just looking up my direct ancestors, I am also trying to get an picture about the whole Conisbrough Appleyard family at the time.
I would be very interested in any pictures or information that your Great Uncle found.

Lancashire / Re: Ellen Fairclough of Adlington
« on: Monday 17 January 11 08:27 GMT (UK)  »
Thanks for all the feedback.  I know from the Marriage certificate of Ellen Fairclough to John Blackburn in 1882 that the father of Ellen was Paul Fairclough (boatman).  I am basing all my assumptions on the mothers name being Ellen also on the baptismal records of Ellen (b 1557) & Anna (Hannah?) (b 1858), but both baptised on the same day (5 Sept 1858). These records in Lancashire-OPC suggest that Ellen is second daughter & Anna the third, suggesting they moved to Adlington shortly pre 1857.

If the mothers name on the baptismal record is incorrect. I can find a family in Adlington: Paul (boatman) & Hannah Ainscough with 2nd & 3rd Daugters Ellen & Hannah and a First Daughter Harriet born in Leigh.
Since a Hannah is also a witness to the Marriage in 1882, this seems a good fit.

I would welcome advice on whether it is sound to question the single baptismal record on the grounds of lack of census information on Paul & Ellen Fairclough in Adlington, or their daughters if it is a different family.
Also, the likelyhood of 2 Paul Faircloughs of similar age in the same village and both boatmen ?

Regards

David

Hi, I realised I was looking at the wrong certificate!

Ellen Fairclough married John Blackburn in November 1882. At this time she is listed as a spinster aged 25, 3 years older than John.  Her birth would therefore be approx 1857.

Her father is Paul Fairclough, Boatman, also married to an Ellen.  I have no details for either, but baptismal records suggest Ellen Fairclough had a sister Anna.

Witnesses at the wedding of John and Ellen are a George Finch and Hannah Fairclough

Thanks in advance

Hi,

My Grandfather Joshua Blackburn married an Ellen Fairclough in Adlington,  Lancashire Sept 1932.  From baptismal records & wedding certificate, her parents are listed as Paul Fairclough (Boatman-presumably leeds liverpool canal) and Ellen.

I also think she had at least 2 sisters (one called Anna).

Any information on the lineage of both parents would be welcome as i'm lost !

Hi All,

I'm descended from the George Appleyard (Josephs uncle).  I have just accessed the birth certificates of the three sons (Frank, Walter and Joseph).  All certificates list the mother as Ann Appleyard (no e) formerly Tyas, resident in Conisbrough.

I also have had no luck finding firm details about the marriage, but have seen reference that they were married in Clitheroe.
