Yes that's the 1851 census I have for him osprey and it does look more like 44 born in Kensington.

I also found that baptism Mabel Bagshawe as a few people have attached it to him on Ancestry but I really can find no reason to assume that's the right baptism for him apart from the fact James has the right occupation. I'd like to find a London baptism for Thomas son of James a carpenter as that would make more sense.

Ok, you could be right there, so it's still a possibility.

Thanks Mabel Bagshawe  :)

Firstly, the 1841 census that you found is probably not relevant as Mary Ballard is a former claymaker on the 1851 but on the 1841 Mary states she is a dressmaker.

The baptism record you found is very interesting indeed and I will be off to search for it in a mo.

The facts are as follows....... and I therefore apologise for my apparent muddled way of progressing .....

I have a Thomas Ballard, born around 1805 (possibly Kensington) who married Eleanor Collins on 28th May 1843 at St Paul, Hammersmith.  The London Marriage Record shows he is the son of James Ballard a carpenter and one of the witnesses is Emily Ballard.

Thomas died in 1860 and the 1851 census is rather unclear when it comes to reading his age.....it's been transcribed as 66 but looks more like 46 and he says he was born in Kensington.

I don't have enough info to trace him on the 1841.

Most people who are researching this family on Ancestry have researched no further than Thomas Ballard and Eleanor Collins.  However there are some who have him born 1807 in Eynesford, Kent, son of James and Mary Ballard.

I can see no evidence at all to attach him to this James and Mary (other than the fact that the 1807 Eynesford baptism states James is a carpenter)

I think the Woolwich baptism you have found is well worth investigating, especially if there is also one for Thomas Ballard, around 1805.

Thanks everyone. Looks like they married in 1842 then......but there's still a problem with the record!

Since I really wanted to confirm who her father was and connect her to a possible brother and since there is not a London Marriage record available it looks as though I need the certificate.

Thanks for all your help.

Thanks avm228. Interesting. There does seem to be a problem with the record to my mind

Yes JenB that's the census I meant and yes Mary Brown's mother is Mary Ballard.

Hadn't thought of a remarriage avm228. Will definitely look into that. On the census her eldest child is 6 which led me to this 1845 marriage.

Thanks osprey. For some silly reason I thought the partners weren't showing on freebmd. They're not on ancestry, FindMyPast or the Genealogist...... unless I'm cracking up!    ::)

I found her on the 1851 with James and her family, including her mother.
Mary Brown, born about 1815 Woolwich.I

Thanks Ray and I've just seen your replies. Maybe it is a transcription error then and it is the right marriage.

Emily Ballard married in the June quarter of 1845 in St Marylebone.
Volume 1 Page 221

For some reason her possible partners names are not showing.

I'm trying to find her marriage to James Brown and think this may be the one.

Other than sending for this marriage certificate, please does anyone know how I can find who this marriage was to. Or please can anyone find the marriage between Emily Ballard and James Brown....because my mind is spinning around in circles  :)
