That looks like them!
The bad transcriptions of Melton are a pain re: census searches online: Milton, Mellon, even Matson. I found Thomas's wife Eliza with Thornton jnr in 1861 under 'Matson'!

Thanks! I've only just discovered this connection, and am intrigued. My grandfather had Melton as his middle name, and we'd been trying to find out where it came from. It was a bit of an eye-opener that it was his mother's legal husband's name, and that he and all his siblings were illegitimate! She had always projected an image of stiff respectability and as far as we had always understood, was married to my great-grandfather. We had known nothing of a previous marriage, let alone that she had got away with bigamy!

I'm interested in Billy's brother Thornton. He married my great-grandmother Sarah Jane Nichols in 1881, but they split up before 1891, and she went to Hull as a fish-gutter. There, she moved in with John Thomas Todd. They had several children (including my grandfather), some of whom, cheekily, had Melton as a middle name, then she married him (bigamously – she claimed to be a widow) in Scarborough in October 1905. Thornton died either in 1906 in Scarborough or 1930 in Sheffield. The problem is, there are 2 Thornton Meltons of about the same age – my Thornton is Billy's brother, the son of Thomas and Eliza, but there's another one, the son of David and another Elizabeth. (Sarah's illegal second 'husband' died in 1924, and she died in 1933.) I can't sort out which died when.

Thornton Melton married Maria Allen in Scarborough in 1837. Their eldest son, Thomas, was bap. in Scarborough on 02/02/1838, and married Elizabeth Milson on 7/10/1856. In 1871, Thomas and Eliza lived in North Street, Scarborough, with the following children:
Mary Jane
Thornton
Thomas
William
Maria
Eliza
Robert
I am interested because the younger Thornton (Thomas's son, born c. 1860) was my great-grandmother's legal husband (he m. Sarah Jane Nichols in 1881, but she contracted a bigamous marriage with my great-grandfather John Thomas Todd in 1905, claiming to be a widow!). However, he had a relative of the same name, the son of David Melton (b. 1825 – was he a brother or nephew of Thornton snr?) and similar age.
One of the Thornton Meltons died in 1906 in Scarborough, aged 45, the other in 1930 in Sheffield, aged 70-71, and I'm trying to sort out which was my great-grandmother's husband!

Mayo / WARD family, poss. Kiltimagh
« on: Wednesday 29 September 10 23:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi! I'm looking for a family called Ward, possibly in Kiltimagh area.
I have a Margaret Ward, born in Mayo c. 1831.
Her father's name was Francis Ward, labourer.

By 1851, Margaret was living in Ebenezer Street, Leeds, West Yorks. She was a domestic servant. She married William Flinn (b. Kidderminster, Worcs, 1830) on 25 Oct 1852. Their first child was born in Leeds, but then they moved back to his home in Staffordshire, where he worked as a puddler in iron forges. They moved to Wortley, Holbeck, Leeds, c. 1864. William was dead by 1881. Margaret was still living in 1891, and in the census gives her birthplace as "Kiltarmock", which I think is a misspelling of Kiltimagh. The Flinn children were:
Mary Ellen, b. 1853, Hunslet, Leeds
Walter, b.1857 West Bromwich
Margaret, b. 1860 West Bromwich
William b. 1863 West Bromwich
Annie, b. 1865 Leeds
Elizabeth, b. 1868 Leeds

I should be grateful for any information on Wards in Kiltimagh and area, especially if anyone can identify Francis and his wife.
