This is from the newspaper coverage in May 1889. It mentions his brothers.
George Higgins himself was the eldest then Charles b 1863 and William b 1874 and James E b 1868. There was a William F born & died 1871.
William 1874 became chief constable of Neath and Edward was a teacher and then a police detective.I don't think they travelled abroad. Also they don't disappear like Charles.
I think the inquest was slightly incorrect regarding a brother being a sols clerk and another coming back from USA as it would seem that was Charles Higgins.

To complete the family George's parents were George 1837-1917 and Charlotte (Ring) 1837-1883 both from Bradford Abbas in Dorset and he also had sisters Bessie 1865, Eliza-Ann 1867, Mary Jane 1872 and Ellen A 1878-1879.

Many thanks. I haven't found him on a census and I think Charles Higgins isn't unusual a name to stand out especially for ship records as often it would be recorded as jus Higgins or with an initial. He was baptised at Tatworth and given the name Paul as a second name although this is the only time I can find with of the middle name give.
Being inquisitive I kick myself for not asking my grandmother more. It does seem a mystery though that someone can just disappear. I question why a young sols clerk would move away. Hopefully he didn't do anything wrong and wanted to hide or perhaps he changed his name or simply is there no record or was his name misreported? As his father had been the local policeman and the family had lived at Tatworth for years I would have thought that even if he died abroad that there would have been something recorded. It would be lovely to find out. I have a number of photos of that generation but none of him so my best guess that he died crossing the sea. Intriguingly at his brother's inquest in 1889 there is a reference to a brother visiting from abroad a few years before and I am confident that it couldn't be one of his other brothers. Thanks again for your suggestions. The US records probably will be my best hope.  Mark

I am still searching without success for Charles P Higgins. Confusingly there is another Charles P Higgins of Pylle, Somerset who is nothing to do with my Charles. There may be some new records that you are aware of but frustratingly I am recalling my grandmother telling me over 50 years ago that he drowned and I am almost certain it was at sea.

My gut feeling is that he emigrated in the late 1880's and died fairly soon afterwards but my research has so far been fruitless. Why would a young solicitors clerk move away? I could understand a farmer or something of that nature and that has only added to the intrigue. If he had joined the navy I feel I would have come across his record by now.

Any further suggestions would be most appreciated.

The family were from around Bradford Abbas, Dorset but his father married Charlotte Ring and became a policeman at Chard, Somerset living at near by Tatworth. Around the time that I believe Charles drowned his father moved to Curry Rivel. I would have thought that if his son drowned that there would have been a newspaper write up or something recorded. Thanks for any help.

Thank you and it seems logical that the name Ann was reused within the family. I hadn't thought of that when I was searching for a different entry. Once again thank you for taking the trouble to help.  Mark

Many thanks The Shropshire ref is incorrect and the other reports correctly say he was from Dorset. George was born George H Ring (hiis mother was Charlotte Ring). Later she married George Higgins who was also from Bradford Abbas and later references confirm you George to be the son of George the older ( he was a policeman who moved to live in Tatworth, Som)

Maddy, a huge thank you and yes you have found my Solomon. The 1910 census shows he is English whilst the first gives his authenicity as Canadian and the next one American. I guess someone completed the form for him? In the 1910 census it gives his occupation as City something?
At sometime it would be good to track down his death, occupation and marriage and thanks to your help it should be possible. In 1865 his brother Clement emigrated to Montana, again in the north and having travelled all that way you would have thought they would live close. His brother became a rancher so there might have been more opportunities for him to go somewhere else.

Thank you again, Mark

I am pretty certain he was not the cook on the ship where a George Higgins drowned. But such a mystery that there is no record. My mind has imagined all sorts of things. Did he do something wrong and fled his sols job? Unfortunately his father moved his police role from Tatworth to Curry Rival around that time otherwise I would have expected to find a reference at Tatworth to someone who had been living there. There was a young Higgins at Chard (nr Tatworth) winning rifle competitions in the local military organinisation. Perhaps he joined the military but I can't find any reference. If it was him to tried to help his brother (I think it must be) then he should appear somewhere. Did he change his name?
I feel there has to be a lucky break at sometime but I'll have to look at all the Chas/Charles' and alternative spellings for Higgins. The best best however  must be the drowning comment. But where? It would seem unlikely that a 20 something would drown in a river or pond. If so it would surely be recorded prominently.
