Thank you both for spending time on this image, it's really appreciated and a really difficult scan to sort out!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / M Christian - newspaper scan image
« on: Saturday 18 March 23 22:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, can anyone help improve this photo which is taken from a scan of a newspaper article from 1975?  It's clearly a very bad digital scan of a black and white photo, of Mabel Christian wearing her Mayor's badge of office.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Thanks Josey and Chris for both your ideas and suggestions, I will try again at different times of the day.  I hadn’t thought about the torch option at all!

I think the wording was inscribed, however the top two lines do appear to have weathered by causing their own “extended shadows” downwards which almost suggests lead lettering or other embossing.

Thanks again for your help.

Graveyards and Gravestones / Help with aged gravestones
« on: Friday 17 January 20 14:52 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I am trying to identify the inscription on aged headstones and struggling.  I have taken the photos with an iPhone so have high quality images I can zoom into and also invert the colours with but neither of these methods are helping at the moment.  Any ideas or suggestions appreciated!

The grave is for Edward Robert Elmhirst Duckering who died in 1948.

Thanks

Thank you for these spots!  Just needed some of your eagle eyes to find some datable features to be able to start to work out who of my relatives may in the photo!

Hi, can anyone help with putting a potential date range to this photo?  Found amongst my aunts photos when she died, we are unable to identify anyone in the photo which was most likely taken in Hull as it has photography company W H Duncan of Anlaby Road Hull on the back.  Any ideas welcome!

"...Still being called "Howlett" in 1881" - now thats pretty obvious when you say it like that!  Apologies for missing the completely obvious there!  Thanks for all the extra pointers you've found and listed there all very helpful.

Thanks very much everyone -

avm228, which other records are consistent with Alice Ann unmarried in the 1881 census?  The record for her birth is just consistent with her age?

I think you are spot on with 'tramway', I think the writing might say that, even though it looks more like 'journey' (which makes less sense!).
