Sutherland / Re: From Sutherland to Fife
« on: Friday 09 November 12 03:05 GMT (UK)  »
I too have family connections in Sutherland and Fife.  My great, great grandmother was Christian/Christina McLeod (1821-1877) and born in Dornoch.  She and James Fyfe (1810-1872; born in Kinghorn, Fife) married at Loth on 18 Feb 1848.  My question is: why would a soldier in the 93rd Regiment of Foot be in Helmsdale? Their marriage registration states the following: On the 18th of February 1848 were married James Fyfe Corporal 93rd Regiment of Foot, Helmsdale and Christian McLeod, Dornoch.
Is there a way to see if the Regiment was stationed in Helmsdale?  I have family in the area, but don't think any documents are kept locally any more.  Any ideas?

Thanks for all your work!  I appreciate it. I would never have thought it that difficult to locate a grave until I went to the Mitchell and tried to look at the old microfilms of the graves in Glasgow- forget that!! The films were in horrible shape and too many to look through, plus I later learned from the Glasgow Herald that they were cremated!

Robert is on the 1861 census, but his wife Cecilia is "head" of house on 1871 and listed at a widow in 1881.  Maybe he did die at sea, but where did his wife go?  She lived on "Back Street" from 1851 to her death in 1883.

Thanks for your trouble.  Now I'm wondering if they were cremated or the stone is on the ground, face down so it hasn't been recorded.  That happened to another line of my family at the Abbotshall Churchyard.
I really appreciate your help!

Hello Norrie!

Do you very many Robert Beveridges in the cemetery in Dysart?  I can't remember if I've asked you before to look, and sorry if I am repeating myself!  You found David Beveridge (1837-1916) and his family in Bennochy Cemetery, Kirkcaldy, but I am trying to locate his father, one of many Robert Beveridges in the area.  He was born around 1803 in Abbotshall and died between 1861 & 1871 in Dysart.  He was married to Cecilia Fisher (1805-1883).  Their daughter Mary was married to Thomas Gray Robb.  They all died in Dysart.

Thanks!

Norrie-
Would you believe that none of those are in my family???  That's very surprising that you didn't fine anyone since I have dates that were based on the monument inscriptions.  Did you look under "Fife" as well as Fyfe?  Just a thought....

Thanks!!

Dear Norrie,
Will you please try to locate photos of the following.  They are supposed to be in the Abbotshall Churchyard:
   James Fyfe 1858-1902
Jessie Wallace Fyfe 1859-1928 (wife of James)

    James Fyfe 1883-1940
Mabel Saunders Fyfe 1879-1940 (Wife of James)

    James Fyfe 1811-1872
Christina McLeod Fyfe 1821-1877 (wife of James)
James Fyfe 1852-1857 (son of James and Christina)
William Reid Thomson Fyfe 1854-1870 (son of James and Christina)
John Fyfe 1856-1867 (son of James and Christina)

If they aren't in the Abbotshall Churchyard, a few may be in Kinghorn if there's another cemetery.

Thanks!  Heather F.

They are mine.  It's Harriet Methven Beveridge and William Methven Beveridge.  I have the death certificates for both of them.  Their parents were David Beveridge and Harriet Methven.  Harriet Methven Beveridge died giving birth to Harriet Methven Beveridge Constable in 1898 and she was married to William Tasker Constable (1871-1962).  William Methven Beveridge was married to Agnes More Gourlay.  None of these names were on the stone with David Beveridge.  If you have a picture of the stones for both/either of these families, I would appreciate it.
