Shropshire / Joseph Nicholls born abt 1783 Wolds End, Salop (where?)
« on: Monday 14 January 19 08:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
can anyone help me with Joseph Nicholls please?
The 1851 census says born Wolds End, Salop - but as far as I know that is miles away in Gloucestershire...?
Wife was Ann, not sure of marriage - pre 1807 it would appear.
Children baptised at Smethwick, Staffs.
Thanks,
Sharon

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / NICHOLLS lookup in Smethwick/Harborne MI's
« on: Monday 14 January 19 02:38 GMT (UK)  »
Would any kind listers be able to check for MI's please at Smethwick and/or Harborne?
I have lost an Isaac NICHOLLS and wife Mary who had issue
Charlotte 1814-1819
Sarah 1816-?
Samuel 1814-1873

I've not traced what happened to Isaac & Mary, or their daughter Sarah.
Charlotte was buried at Smethwick.
There was another NICHOLLS family there at the same time - a Joseph & Ann, not sure if they are related or not?
If anyone can help that would be great,
thanks,
Sharon

Hi Judith,
I have written to the Goulburn FHS for a lookup in the St Saviours records.
Yes, I am not convinced that the parents on the shipping that William & Jane are his biological parents.
The 51 census has him age 39, and her 40.
The 41 census both 30.
The 1853 shipping, both age 41.
His death 1887 in his 76th year.
Her baptism 1810.
Married 1828, she age 18, him 16-17.
No baptism found for him, but there was a lot of non-conformism in the area.
So far I have identified two William Wilsons who married a Jane in the Skipton area:
1) William Wilson of Grassington age 22 = Jane Ibbotson of Threshfield age 21 at Linton by License 12 Sep 1812 (they have a son Henry in 1823)
See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Wilson-21011
2) William Wilson = Jane Binns @ Kildwick 6 Sep 1819
Both these couples are in the 41 and 51 censuses.
I am not seeing a baptism for Henry atm, or any baptisms to William & Jane in that time period.
Henry states parents dead in 1853.
I am thinking at this stage he was maybe the issue of a sibling, brought up in one of the William & Jane households...??
I have been trawling through Wade registers at Skipton hoping to find some clues :)
A few William's, and also a Henry who has a wife Jane...
thanks for your help,
Sharon

A couple of points -

St Saviour's is the Anglican cathedral in Goulburn and the style "Very Rev" is one used for the Dean of an Anglican cathedral.  It's a beautiful building. I think earlier posts had already established that this would be the place of marriage.

Back to the original reason for the request.  Have I got it right that you think the parents listed on his immigration may not be his biological parents? And the immigration record is the earliest record of parents?

And this is the info from his first marriage?
Yes, he was a Woolcomber, bachelor, she a spinster, botp, both made their marks, with consent of parents crossed out, witnesses Francis Capstick & Thos Thompson

Hope you can find this info, although it seems possible that he will just give the same parent names as he did on the immigration record  :(

I can go to the NLA but not till at least the weekend.  Perhaps an email to St Saviour's cathedral office may be useful.  ??? office@goulburncathedral.org.au

Is this is the assumed UK marriage?

And shipping has CofE :)

Doesn't the fact that they were married by the Dean of Goulburn indicate that it was an Anglican marriage? (rather than Roman Catholic).

Yes :)
Have you searched TROVE ?  Free site for newspapers covering early 1800s to 1950s.
Goulburn NSW had several papers.

Indeed, there are 18 people who have him in their tree with the wrong parents, I have messaged them all.
Maybe one of them will think to buy the certificate :)

:)

I remain convinced that the information he gave the clergy when marrying Rebecca in 1874 needs to be considered for one of the questions he would have been asked was the names including the nee name of both his parents.  Other questions include where born, age, occupation, status ....   The Official Transcription (less than $20 Au) would provide the same info as the real deal cert, and it costs less, and will have sufficient info to know which denomination (Anglican v Roman Catholic) to then find where the original parish registers are currently held - seems likely that the registers have been filmed  :D
