Hi Jan
Nice to hear from you.  I haven't been on Roots Chat for years, but did get your message in my email.
Firstly it was my Great Grandfather Arthur Alexander Spencer who went to Day Dawn/Cue.  His daughter Gertrude was my grandmother.  The child that has Cullodin as middle name was Edwin Addis Cullodin Spencer 1855-1938.  He remained farming in north west Victoria.  Sydney Charles did go to Day Dawn/Cue.  I am not sure if both brothers went together or if one followed the other.
I would love to have photos of Austinette and Arthur William.  Do you have any?
Austinette was not living with her husband in Victoria for a number of years before she left for WA.  If you search for her in Ancestry.com.au, you should find my tree which has some newspaper cuttings regarding domestic violence.
I am going to Tasmania in Dec and meeting up with Robert Spencer's descendants.
If you have any further information/photos about the family I would be really interested.  And if you have a tree on Ancestry let me know.  If I can be of any help - happy to.

Regards Ruth Anderson

London and Middlesex / Re: Looking for David Anderson b 7 Jan 1816 Poplar, Middlesex

After posting this yesterday, I now believe that David may have died in 1858 - and that may have been my tree that you saw.  I had a look at a letter written in 1858 which hinted at payment of David's burial expenses and putting funds in keeping for David's sons when they become of age.

I will have a look for a second marriage.

Thanks for your help.

London and Middlesex / Looking for David Anderson b 7 Jan 1816 Poplar, Middlesex

I am trying to find information on David Anderson above, his Wife Sarah Stephenson (b 1826) and their 2 sons Alexander b 1847 and William b 1851.
I can find the family in Bromley, Middlesex in 1851 census, but cannot find them after that.
David's brother's William Alexander and Alexander Anderson had both moved to Australia, as did a sister Matilda.  But family in Aus do not know of David.

Can anyone help?

Hello Ferret
I am descended from the youngest child of the family, Arthur William Spencer. He went from Yorkshire to Tasmania in 1853 - not transported.  I do not believe Robert was in any way a legal person.  He was a teacher in England and was transported for uttering a forged cheque.  He had a wife alive, and daughter dead at the time of transportation.  He remarried in Australia while his wife in England was still alive.  Wife is listed in 1841 census as brewer/publican.  Robert was joined by brother Arthur and they also operated a brewing company in Tasmania but that was insolvent in 1855.  Arthur had married in 1854 had 3 sons in Tasmania, but then moved to Bendigo in Victoria.  Bendigo at that time was a gold rush area.  He was insolvent again in 1879, and in 1887 at the age of 60 he was in court for beating his wife.  I believe his wife left him around that time as in 1894 his wife is not present with him.  His wife moved to Cue/Day Dawn in the Murchison area of Western Australia to join another son Arthur Alexander Spencer (my great grandfather) and his family in the  WA goldfields.  She died there in 1909 and her husband died in Bendigo the following year - buried in pauper's grave.
Do you know what became of the 2 sisters Harriot and Louisa?
If you have an ancestry profile, I would be happy to give you access to my tree which has a fair amount of information about the Australian side of this family.  BTW the Premier is not Prime Minister or President.  Australia has a Prime Minister who covers the whole of Aus as does your PM, the Premier is the top politician in each State.  so Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia etc all have a Premier.  Regards Ruth

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Alexander Anderson d 22 Sep 1850

I have seen those 2 as well - but not the correct family.  I cannot find him in 1941 census, but do have his wife and 3 of children in 1851 census after his death. And after that I lose them again.

I wonder if he was visiting Scotland at the time the census was taken.

I am more confident that this is my Alexander, but I would like to prove it, and I think the ony proof would be to prove his parents.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks Carol and Steve

Good to know I am not wasting time and money trying to obtain the death cert.

I will try the London Gazette to see if he is listed and also see if I can pinpoint when he moved to London from Scotland.

If any has any other ideas on how I may establish his parentage, please let me know.

I am trying to determine the parentage of this man.  I believe him to be born in Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland in 1777 to William Anderson and Agnes Couper.  However other Ancestry people have either no parents or different parents.
He had been living in Poplar/Bow/Bromley London, but at the time he died he was in Kensington.
Occupation:  Carpenter/block maker.  Married to a Mary, born Worsley, Surrey.  Ancestry folk have a marriage to Mary Greatach but this does not match my Alexander.
I have his Will, but of course this does not give his parents.
If I obtain the death certificate will that give me his parents?  Is there an easier way of dong that other than having a hard copy sent from UK.  (I am in Australia).

Any help would be appreciated.

Armed Forces / Re: Royal Navy 1790's
« on: Monday 21 December 15 20:13 GMT (UK)  »
Once again - thank you.
The memorandum cited in the original posting showed a listed of all his ships from the Dragon in 1798 to the Prospero in 1814 and their commanders.  Interestingly the ship after Dragon was Foudroyant under Admiral Lord Keith and Capts Philip Bever and John Searle.  He was second gunner on this ship in the Mediterranean.
He was also entitled to the Egypt medal, but he had died by the time this was issued.
Of interest maybe is that we have 2 logbooks he kept as a midshipman (on Zealand and Monarch) as well as 2 swords he had as a Lieutenant.  One of these swords is the Nelson Navy sword.  Nelson prescribed a lion on the handle and the navy anchor.  These are held by a cousin in Edinburgh.  I tried to post a picture but they are too large for this site.

I will keep looking for information pre 1798, now as an ordinary seaman.

Regards Ruth
