Initially you need to look up the census and work backwards

I am new to this site and reading through am so impressed by the help you received with the birth certificate in Switzerland.

I have been trying for years to find out about my great grandfather - Frederick Oeschger - who according to census/birth certs of his children etc was born Switzerland 1847.

We know he spoke German as he used to write in the margins of various 'serious' books - e.g. story of Thomas Carlyle.

He first appears on my grandfather's birth certificate at 5 Noel Street, London 30th November 1874.

He was not at this address in 1871 [census] though the mother of his children was - Emma Payne and her mother Caroline.

I can trace him from 1874 onwards, the birth of his 12 children - although for some reason he never married Emma, his addresses as a father and Master Cabinet Maker and later Antique Dealer till his death in 1926.

He died alone and rather separated from his family as he became slightly eccentric. however try as I may I cannot find his origins.

The name was changed because of the Wars and some called themselves Payne and some Oscar and a combination of the two. He finished up with quite a dynasty but we just do not know where it all started.  Please Please can anyone help?.

Does anyone have any information about Frederick Oeschger from Switzerland - first appears on birth certificate of his first child 1874 5 Noel street, St Pancras. Not on 1871 census but I found a Frdk Oeschger on passenger list SS Cuba Liverpool to Boston - says labourer whereas he was a Master Cabinet maker [born abt 1847]. Did he go to US first. Can follow his whole life from 1874 to his death in Hammersmith 1926 as quite an eccentric. He had 12 children by Emma Payne but never married. The name was later amended to Oscar and another researcher of one of his siblings says her grandfather was called Payne. Does anyone have any ideas  as I have been trying for years without success. Thanks Fayetta

Hello Valda - new to the site as you probably know joined yesterday when I came across it by accident. Not sure how I get on to start a new quest can only see reply options hence here. Am looking for any information about Frederick Oeschger from Switzerland first appears as my great great grandfather 5 Noel Street, St Pancras where his first child was born- can follow his life from then on - he had 12 children by Emma Payne but they never married. He was a Master Cabinet Maker died alone in Hammersmith - inquest - newspaper report - have all that but not his origins. Tried for many years now and found another researcher from another sibling who has been trying too. The name was anglicised because of the Wars some using Payne and Oscar. I was brought up in Edmonton. Is there anyone out there who knows ? DOB 1847.
Can you also tell me how to start a new message ?
Looks an interesting site. Many thanks Fayetta
