Hi Ray,
there must have been some proof of service at some stage in order for him to have been interned an a Returned Soldiers cemetery, it's just a matter of tracking it down. Do you know if he was receiving a pension?  if he served in the British Forces he would have been entitled to be in a NZ cemetery, the hat doesn't necessarily mean he was in the NZ forces.

Alan NZ

Hi Alan.

I agree there must be some proof out there somewhere, but I am still unable to find it.

I don't know if he received a pension, I was aged only 6 years old when he died aged 71. (That in itself is another long story).

There are only 4 of his children from his 2nd (known) marriage alive, and due to some extremely nasty stuff happening 2 of the others are holidaying at "Her Majesties Pleasure".

The only brother that I have anything to do with doesn't know or want to know about Dad and his history.

So the task is mine alone and I want to be able to let my Children and grandchildren know about their history.

Hi, I don't know what you mean by "Is it a CWGC war grave"

the term War Grave makes me think that he died whilst in the Armed Forces and that he had a grave from the Commonwealth War Graves commission, in which case he would be on their database.

http://www.cwgc.org/

If I understand correctly NZ and Australia had Returned Servicemens organisations as opposed to the Royal British Legion (RBL) in the UK. RBL doesn't provide graves for ex-service personnel and I wasn't aware that other ex-service organisations did.

The hat in the photo looks like the typical NZ hat of the era. On the jacket sleeve, is that a mark on the photo or does it look like a badge of some sort?

Hi, Australia has the "Returned Services League" New Zealand has the "Returned Services Association".

The badge on the Jacket sleeve has been identified as "The Kings Crown" I don't know the significance of the Badge and can only guess that it is "British"?

Ray.

Have you ruled the George Henry Thomas Little out? Hes the only hit coming up on Archway.

however there are 5x george littles  :(

CWGC is Commonwealth War Graves Commission..However your man didnt die in service or of war effects in the qualifying period so he isnt in a CWGC plot.

Ady

Hi Ady,

Yes,  George Henry Thomas Little has been ruled out. The other George Little have also been ruled out.

The Insignia of the "Foreign Allied Forces" is on Dad's plaque.

So I guess that Dad may have enlisted over-sea's, But where is the question.

Thanks again  Ray.

I suggest you contact the local RSA were he is buried, and also Veterans Affairs New Zealand, the latter are responsible for all Returned Soldiers Cemeteries. In order for him to have been buried in a Soldiers Cemetery he would have to have had active service and these details would have had to be supplied to the department who would then authorise his internment there.  These details would most likely have been supplied by the Returned Service's Association either through the next of kin or from there own records.

If you do not have any success within the next two weeks send me the details via pm of the soldier concerned and I will see what i can do.

Regards

Alan NZ

Hi Alan NZ,

I have been in contact with the Papakura RSA and Veterans Affairs.
Both of which have not been able to produce any information. The RSA has provided a copy of the order for the Plaque and a receipt for payment. Neither of these show a service number.

The only hint of a number is on the order form and the form states "Plaque No. A1699. Ordered on 12 Jun 1974. Official Receipt No. E219848.

The Plaque shows the insignia of the "Foreign Allied Forces" but again no further information other that date of death 1961.

Cheers  Ray.

is this his probate record

http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/ViewFullItem.do?code=14765955

My guess is that he's in one of the 2 NZ companies in the Imperial Camel Corps

Hi, Yes that is his Probate record. I have it in my possession and nothing is mentioned re military service.

Thanks for the guess at the "Imperial Camel Corps, I didn't know there was camel corps.

Thanks for your time.

Ray.

The man in the Photo is my late Father and there is a mystery around his military service. He is buried in a War Grave here in New Zealand, but there is no service number shown on his plaque.
Thanks in advance.

could you clarify the War Grave? Is it a CWGC war grave and what year did he pass away?

Hi, I don't know what you mean by "Is it a CWGC war grave"

He is buried in a "Returned Servicemans Plot"

He died 27 November 1961 at Papakura New Zealand.

Thanks

May I suggest you look at the site Sylvia suggested and you will get all the info you need on the Anzac's in the Middle East, the NZ forces served in Egypt from Feb 1915 repulsing an attack by the Turkish Forces on the Canal Zone, They were also involved against the Turks in Sinai and Palestine, They had  mounted troops but I am not sure if it was camels they used, maybe the camels are just pack animals, later in 1915 they were shipped to Gallipoli, I suggest your pic is dated 1915.

We remember the Anzac Forces with gratitude on this day 11th November and at Cenotaphs throughout the UK on  Sunday 14th.

James

ps. Welcome to Rootschat

Hi James and thanks.

I have looked at the site and there certainly is a similarity between the 2 gentleman, however I don't believe the one on the site is Dad. But, I shall keep an open mind and make a closer study.

"we shall remember them"

Thanks also for the welcome.

Ray.
