London and Middlesex / Mount Street, Newington/Walworth

Does anyone know exactly where Mount Street was in the Newington/Walworth area of Southwark.  I know it was near to the Walworth Road but that's as much as I know.  I have a book showing the entire street maps of London in 1939 but the street has obviously gone by that time as it is not listed.  I have census records from 1881 showing family members living there.

My great grandfather was a tailor before the first world war and I have a wonderful photograph of he and his colleagues standing outside their shop, Carlish's American Tailors, in Red Lion Court, Fleet Street in 1912.  I know it's 1912 because there's a large sign in the shop window proclaiming "Blues and Greys for season 1912"!

However what I would like to know is more information regarding Carlish's American Tailors.  I have tried to find information on the internet but to date I've had no luck.  Does anyone have any ideas where I might be able to find anything out?

Hi,
I came across your message by chance.   I dont have a photograph, but Michael Faraday school has fond memories for me, as it was my first school (1939), and I assume it was the same building as your relative attended in  1920, a typical old LCC school.
Websites refer to Michael Faraday School as being in Portland Street, S.E.17.   That may be the case now, but when I was a child in Walworth the present building was known as Westmoreland Road School, on the corner of what was Westmoreland Road/Portland Street/Faraday Street.   The latter street no longer exists.
The Michael Faraday school I knew was located at the junction of Dawes Street and Mann Street, Walworth.   The location no longer exists, as the area has been redeveloped.
I can recall going to the school one morning (in 1940/41 - I can' be sure). to find it was no longer there!!!   It had been demolished by bombs during the previous night, as had numerous houses in the vicinity.   The damage was such, that the whole area was redeveloped after the war.
It doesn't help with getting a photograph, but you may be interested in the history.   Regards,  'Farina'

Hi

Many thanks for the information.  I wasn't aware that it had been bombed during the Blitz.  You mention Dawes Street; do you remember a seamstress shop on the corner of Dawes Street and Wooler Street as this was owned by my great grandmother until the early 1940s.

Go to http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/

This is probably the best WW1 forum anywhere and is full of experts who will give you all the advice and assistance you could want in tracking your grandfather's details.

Log on to a Facebook group called Now and Then Walworth.  It has 1000's of old Walworth photos and hundreds of regular contributors who have a wealth of knowledge on everything to do with Walworth past and present.  I use it regularly and it's probably one of the best internet places to visit for info on Walworth.

I have a photo of my great grandfather taken around 1908-1914 showing him and his colleagues standing in front of their shop, Carlish's American Tailors in Red Lion Square, Fleet Street.  Does anyone know anything about this shop or if there are any websites detailing Victorian/Georgian london tailors shops.

Does anyone know if there are any old photos available anywhere of the Michael Faraday School in Walworth.  My gran went there in the 1920s but I've not been able to find any on the web.

Cheers

Many thanks for the advice and I will follow this up.  I live in Shropshire although I do make regular trips down to London so I will visit the heritage centre but will also e-mail.  My gran used to talk about working at Woolwich but as a kid you just don't take much notice until it's too late!  The current 70th anniversary of the Blitz has renewed my determination to find more specific details; I remember her talking about the first day of the Blitz when she was walking along the road that Saturday afternoon near the river when the Luftwaffe loomed over head.  She also remembered a margerine manufacturing plant being hit by bombs with processed margerine entering the Thames and causing a horrendous stink for weeks; she could never eat margerine after that because the taste and smell invoking bad memories!
