« on: Wednesday 11 December 19 19:06 GMT (UK)  »
I’m trying to find the parents of James Perkins from England. He was born Feb 22, 1830 and died Dec 7, 1904 in Rock Island, Illinois. His obituary doesn’t list his parents name. I’m trying to find his parents names.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Y-dna test and a different last name?
« on: Sunday 10 February 19 16:51 GMT (UK)  »
I took a dna test on ftdna. I have a cousin who has a genetic distance of 3 at 37 markers with the same last name as me. When I change the chromosome markers to 25, I have several people at a genetic distance of 1 and 2 with different surnames than me. Who is technically closer related to me? How would different surnames happen? Is the genetic relationship most likely pre-surname time frame?

Has anyone had any luck in using any sort of chromosome browser or dna painting to determine the parents of an adopted ancestor? My moms great great grandpa was adopted. I’m wondering if anyone has and any success in using a program to sort certain chromosomes to narrow down a cousin that is related to you through that ancestor. For example finding a cousin that is related to the parents of my adopted ancestor. Then I can trace back their ancestry tree to see what makes sense.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Best way to assign chromosomes to certain ancestors?
« on: Saturday 08 December 18 17:08 GMT (UK)  »
So I got my mom and myself tested on 23andme. My mom has a 2nd great grandpa that was adopted. I basically just found out about him from a old letter from my great great grandma to my mom. So I’m trying to map the chromosomes of my other ancestors to eliminate certain cousins that I know aren’t related to him. I’m hoping to do this to find cousins who are related to my great great great grandpa and compare Ancestry trees. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best tool to do this?

FH Documents and Artefacts / Storing letters/documents

I have old letters from my great great grandma that I want to archive and like 100 old certificates from the military and jobs my dad received before he passed away. What is the best way to store them in a binder? Are there EXTREMELY sturdy sleeves that are very hard to bend or should I look at normal acid free sleeves and put a cardboard archival back in the sleeve? I’ve seen something like this on archiving websites. What do you suggest? My other concern is that the letters have 2 sides to them.
