Herefordshire Completed Look up Requests / Re: "Colabra" Leominster
« on: Tuesday 25 August 15 23:07 BST (UK)  »
Thanks keyboard86 for the census information. The Weavers were obviously family friends as Granny married in Leominster in 1914 and we have the newspaper report of the wedding listing the guests who attended plus the names of those who gave gifts.  Mr & Mrs Alfred Weaver gave a “Brass crab fish inkstand”. (!)  The album was compiled by the mother of the groom so perhaps she was entertained by the Weavers or they may even have put her up while she was attending the wedding?  However the Weavers were not listed among the guests who attended the reception.

And you are right mirl the house is still there and I’ve managed to establish its location.  Thank you.

Don’t think I’m going to get much further than this at the moment but brilliant result in such a short space of time.

Cheers.

Thanks to you both and you are quite right it is Colaba-I misread the handwriting although it is one of the clearer captions-some others are virtually indecipherable!  I'll look into both and see if I can discover what the connection was and let you know my findings.

Rootschat never fails!

Thank you once again.

Herefordshire Completed Look up Requests / "Colabra" Leominster
« on: Sunday 23 August 15 23:44 BST (UK)  »
Looking through some old family albums with my husband’s cousin we came across this photo captioned “Colabra”  Leominster. Their grandmother was from Leominster but we don’t think this was her home.  Can anyone in the area recognize this house?  Is it still there and/or know where it is/was?  Judging by the other photos in the album it probably dates from the period 1890-1920.

Many thanks.

I've rescanned as a colour photo as per your suggestion Bill.  The resolution appears to be set at 2400dpi.

Hope this might make a difference

Thanks

Thank you everyone.  What a talented lot you are.  I shall have a go at re-scanning as suggested and re-submit.

Found him via his (deceased) brother's record - his details as next of kin are almost illegible but can make out Midlothian, Scotland so Edinburgh backdrop would be appropriate.  It is a lovely photo and as has been pointed out his plaid has been beautifully folded.  On the record dated 1919 he is down as a private but had noticed the revolver holster.  Can't see any rank insignia but the photo is undated so he may have stayed in the forces and been commissioned at a later date, possibly 1920s?

Concerning the brooch holding the plaid I found this photo via the site suggested http://www.scottishmilitaryarticles.org.uk/smhshaltwhogoes40.htm  of private in the Seaforths in 1897 with similar brooch.

Thanks for all your kind comments, help and suggestions.  I'll follow them up

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Make this Scottish Soldier clearer?

Tried to post this earlier but omitted to put Subject!  Apologies, especially if it appears twice.

Already posted this photo to WW1 forum as trying to identify regiment.  The folks there are mainly of the opinion that he's a  Seaforth Highlander but if it could be sharpened up a bit to see the sporran badge, hose tops and other insignia it would be a great help.

Many thanks.

World War One / Re: Scottish Regiment Identification

Dear All

Once again thanks for your responses and help.  Having looked at the regiment identification site I though the tartan was perhaps Gordon Highlanders but the sporran would point definitely to Seaforth I think.

Took me a bit of time but I managed to download the bit of fairly faint and  illegible record for Henry. One section is as it appears the other is a bit of cut and paste I attempted when I realised one bit was torn and should fit the lighter line.  Still didn't help much but maybe someone can make a bit more sense of it.

Regarding the photo he is very smartly turned out but would it be worth putting up in the Photo section to see if anyone can clean it up a bit?

Thanks again everyone.

Thanks to all for your responses. Lots to read through and follow up but initially it does look like Glencourse as likely place

I'll have a go at posting the illegible section to see if anyone can decipher further.  Meanwhile another inspection of the number and I think what we read as 1 may be / so number may be S/61558.  We'll try that and see if anything emerges.

Cheers all for your interesting articles and links.
